Want to trade in your current hair colour for a new season shift? If Google discover is anything to go by, “soft copper hair colour” is leading the charge after the search engine noticed a spike in visitors seeking out inspo for the soft, warm shade.
While copper hair often sees an uplift as we approach autumn, it works just as beautifully through spring and summer when the sunlight can pick up on the golden and terracotta tones. And, like the name suggests, “soft copper” is on a much gentler and more natural end of the spectrum than the hi-vis reds, burgundies and cherry-colas that thrive over autumn-winter. Instead it taps into amber, bronze cinnamon and burnt sienna shades that lean a little more rosy, golden or apricot.
It's not just us searching for the shade online, hair colourists are noticing a shift in requests. “What I find so fascinating right now is that clients are coming in and asking for something that looks completely natural but feels absolutely transformative, and that is honestly the most exciting creative challenge for a colourist,” explains Orel Hair & Beauty founder, Oray Oz (whose celebrity roster includes Gigi Hadid and Lindsay Lohan). "Clients who would never have dreamed of touching a red are suddenly open to this gorgeous warm, burnished copper that feels very them rather than very dramatic. The version everyone wants is earthier than coppers we have seen before, closer to cognac or tarnished copper with a russet warmth to it," he adds.
