Checkerboard is bigger, bolder and more lairy than its cottage-core summer cousin, gingham

The planes of colour are more distinct. Geeky fashion fact for ya: whereas gingham is woven with fibres that cross over to create two same-shade squares in the pattern, and one combining both, checkerboard just has the two shades. They’re not the same.

If you want to get on board (ahem) you can make a statement or go subtle. Accessories are always an easy way to work a trend and checkerboard works brilliantly on an array of finishing touches. Wrap Urban Outfitters’ belt over a little black dress to give your classics a fresh feel, slip ASOS’s organic cotton tote into your handbag for a cool way to cart your spare shoes or team Monki’s cute beanie hat with a neutral tracksuit

If you choose check colours that are similar, it’s an easier way to wear the trend. Try & Other Stories’ lime and off-white jumper or H&M’s lilac and lavender jeans. Then, if you want to go all out, pick a pattern with highly contrasting shades. Black and white look strongest but we also love Skinnydip’s bright red and pink knit. Wear it with pink jeans to nail 2022’s tribute to Y2K style. Check, mate.
