We tried every beauty trend of 2018 and this is what we thought...
2018 has been a big year for beauty; we've witnessed the proliferation of glass hair, faux freckles and rose gold everything, not to mention Meghan Markle's wedding makeup, Rihanna's skinny eyebrows and Ariana Grande's platinum blonde pony - and that's just for starters.
So, as the year draws to a close, GLAMOUR's beauty editors have rounded up each and every tried and tested beauty trend of the past twelve months, from the wonderfully weird to the fool-proof and fabulous, to reflect on what has been a truly beauty-full year.
PINK HAIR
Playful pinks and pastel rose golds were a hot hair trend this year – both on the streets and spotted on celebs (hello Hailey Baldwin). My shade was a mellow rosé courtesy of Hare & Bone, and I opted for a semi-permanent toner which washed out completely within four weeks. So even those scared of commitment can get involved.
FAUX FRECKLES
Super cute and oh-so-easy to achieve, a smattering of faux freckles has been every beauty girl's go-to daytime look for 2018. I found that using two different shades of eyebrow pencils was the easiest way to achieve a believable finish - and a freckle stencil never goes amiss for beginners!
GLASS HAIR
No one knows how to achieve glass hair better than hair stylist to the Kardashians Chris Appleton. According to Chris, the key is a generous spritz of Color Wow Dreamcoat and a meticulous middle parting.
FOIL LIPS
We first saw foil lips backstage at Jeremy Scott's Spring Summer 2019 fashion show, where MAC makeup pro Kabuki used art supplies to create a show-stopping lip. We found that Kryolan's Pure Pigment Metallic worked best for a true foil finish (rather than glitter). Plus it didn't feel weighty on the lips and never smudged once throughout the day.
POWDER LIPSTICK
On the other end of the lip look spectrum launched a whole new slew of lip powders from MAC, Buxom, NYX, By Terry and more. The effect is a soft stain with a matte texture that's lightweight and pillowy. I love how effortless and lived in they look, opposed to a full-blown bold lip. Make sure to prep your pout with a quick exfoliation and balm to ensure the product glides on and adheres easily.
BLACK LIPSTICK
Previously confined to the realms of Camden Market, black lipstick enjoyed a bit of a renaissance over the past year, mainly thanks to Fenty Beauty Stunna Lip Paint in Uninvited, which provides a punchy but wearable matte black finish. Unless going for full on gothic glam, we found it best to pair down eyes and keep the complexion fresh for this trend.
TatchaJAPANESE SKINCARE
Texture and innovation made J-Beauty our 2018 skincare obsession after years of K-Beauty loyalty. After one month of testing every Japanese skincare product I could get my hands on, I still love using the DHC Cleansing Oil to melt away my makeup and Tatcha's Water Cream as my morning moisturiser.

Sadly, this is not me as I looked a little cray with soap brows, plus @nikki_makeup does it better. There really is no better way to keep your face framers brushed up and in place, but be careful not to overdo it with the soap or you'll feel every single expression you make and not in a good way. Run your spoolie along your soap bar, and then brush it through your brows in an upwards and outwards motion. Nikki does this first and then fills in second. I think I went wrong by not trimming my brows first – they're naturally quite long so I looked more like an evil scientist than a supermodel. Damn.
