We all like to chop and change our favourite beauty brands, but every once in a while a brand comes along that truly stands out in its category for making a difference, be it advancing ethical or sustainability practices or making inclusivity the norm. It’s these winning brands – that take a stance and go the extra mile for what they believe in – that got your vote.
To discover the ones that really stand out, ahead of the crowd, we asked our panel of experts, and you, to vote for your favourite plastic-free, carbon neutral, organic, vegan, cruelty-free, refillable, inclusive and activist brands.

Best vegan brand
Gone are the days where you had to choose between a product being vegan and being efficacious because now, many of the very best brands out there are vegan and the favourite – topping the vote – is Milk Makeup. The NYC-based cosmetics brand was founded in 2014 and later came to the UK in 2019, and it’s been a firm fave ever since. In particular, the Hydro Grip Primer (pictured), Kush Mascara and Matte Bronzer are among the brand’s bestsellers.

Best cruelty-free brand
The Body Shop has been at the forefront of ethical beauty for decades, continually finding ways to improve its practices and products, and it is still winning your recognition for it in 2022. One such initiative is the brand’s Forever Against Animal Testing campaign, which has been fighting alongside Cruelty Free International in working towards a worldwide ban on cosmetics testing on animals.

Best organic brand
Weleda has been a staple among beauty experts for years (we’re talking decades; the brand launched in 1921) due to its now-famous intensive hydrator Skin Food. Since then, Weleda has branched out into baby care, body care and health care, always staying true to its use of organic materials and sustainable practices.

Best carbon-neutral brand
Tropic has long been on a mission to become its most sustainable self (which is, of course, always in progress) – one aspect of that being carbon neutrality. As a certified carbon-neutral company, Tropic double offsets its carbon emissions with everything from product deliveries to HQ emissions, and even the team’s commute to work. It’s a bravo from us and you!

Best refillable brand
Whilst refillable options aren’t going to solve all of the beauty industry’s sustainable problems, it certainly helps. The brand you voted as leading the way on refillable solutions is L’Occitane; its eco-refills save approximately 85% of the plastic used in the original items. Some of the brand’s bestsellers include the Almond Shower Oil, Shea Verbena Hands & Body Soap, and Lavender Foaming Bath, to name a few.

Best plastic-free brand
New Zealand-born brand Ethique started in 2012 with a clear mission of eliminating unnecessary plastic from the beauty industry by offering effective products in solid form. Ethique sells shampoo and conditioner bars, lip balm, deodorant, face cleanser, body care, and even household items. And it’s the brand’s plastic-free efforts that have impressed you, earning it the best plastic-free brand award in this year’s GLAMOUR Beauty Power List Awards.

Best inclusive brand
Inclusivity is in Fenty Beauty’s DNA, paving the way for equality being a non-negotiable when it comes to beauty, and forcing many brands to wise up and take action. Its Beauty For All message shows through with each and every product launch, and it gets your vote.

Lush is the OG activist brand – speaking up about everything from helping locals after natural disasters and raising awareness for extinct animals to campaigning against internet-control shutdowns, supporting LGBTQ+ rights, and promoting human rights. Lush proves that beauty brands can have far more of an impact than just bath bombs and body wash. That’s exactly what makes them worthy of winning GLAMOUR’s activist brand category.
