14 acrylic nail ideas to inspire your next trip to the salon
Still debating your next mani? Our curated edit of acrylic nail ideas has all the inspiration you need. While BIAB (that’s “builder in a bottle” for newbies) has stolen the spotlight in recent years, acrylic nails remain a salon staple – loved for their durability, versatility, and ability to deliver drama or subtlety, with or without extensions.
If you’re new to the world of acrylics, here’s the lowdown: this long-standing nail treatment involves applying a liquid and powder mix over your natural nails or extension tips. The result? A hardwearing mani that lasts two to four weeks, by which time a bit of regrowth will be visible at the base of your nails.
Design-wise, there are almost endless options to choose from when it comes to acrylic nail ideas, from single blocks of colour to ombré manicures, or glazed donut nails to velvet nails.
So whether you’re loyal to a classic French tip or lean into intricate nail art, the below acrylic nail designs are guaranteed to inspire you (or land on your Pinterest board for a later date). Plus, if you’re wondering whether acrylics are right for you, celebrity manicurist Michelle Humphrey breaks it all down.
And matching your nail polish to your bra might be, too.

What are acrylic nails?
Acrylic is a powerhouse in the nail world - think of it as the OG nail enhancement. “A monomer liquid and a polymer powder are mixed together to create a mouldable bead that is sculpted onto the nail to create structure,” explains Humphrey. “It then hardens into a strong and durable nail enhancement.”
How are acrylic nails different from gel?
While both are popular salon treatments, acrylic and gel nails differ in both application and finish. Acrylics harden naturally when exposed to air, whereas gel nails require curing under a UV or LED lamp. “It truly is a skill to apply acrylic,” says Humphrey. “You’re essentially working against the clock – shaping the product before it sets rock solid.”
When it comes to durability, acrylic nails tend to be stronger and more rigid than gels. “Gel nails are typically more flexible,” adds Humphrey, “offering a slightly more natural look and feel, but with less strength overall.”
Are acrylic nails better than gel?
According to Humphrey, there’s no clear winner between gel and acrylic nails – it all comes down to personal preference and lifestyle. “It’s about what suits you best,” she says. “If you need maximum strength or love a longer nail, acrylic might be the right choice. But if you prefer something shorter, with a more natural feel that doesn’t need to be quite as strong, gel could be a better fit.”
One thing to keep in mind is that acrylic systems often come with a strong scent (even the low-odour versions). “It’s a bit of a marmite situation,” Humphrey admits. “Some people don’t mind it at all, while others can’t stand it. Gel, on the other hand, has minimal to no odour, which can be another deciding factor.”
Are acrylic nails good for your nails?
With the rise of builder gels in recent years, acrylic nails have seen a dip in popularity – sometimes even earning an unfair reputation. “Acrylic has almost become a bit of a taboo product,” says Humphrey. “There’s a common misconception that it ruins your nails, but in reality, it usually down to improper application, maintenance, or removal. And here’s the secret: the same kind of damage can happen with gel enhancements, too.”
The key to minimising nail damage? Always go to a trusted, professional nail technician. “It’s essential they’re using high-quality, cosmetic-grade products,” she adds. “Avoid non-standard salons that use MMA acrylic – it’s a major red flag.”
Soft and so pretty 💜

How do you remove acrylic nails?
“Acrylics should be soaked off using acetone,” explains Humphrey. “You can either wrap each nail in foil with acetone-soaked cotton pads or immerse your fingertips in a manicure bowl.”
If your acrylics have gel polish on top, that layer will need to be gently buffed off before soaking. “Cosmetic-grade acrylic is actually a breeze to remove,” she adds. “In fact, I often find it easier to remove than some builder gels.”
How much should acrylic nails cost?
The price can vary widely depending on your location and your nail technician’s experience. “You can expect to pay anywhere from £30 to £100,” says Humphrey. “It also depends on the look you’re going for – custom nail art or extra-long lengths will naturally push the price up. Longer nails take more time to sculpt, and detailed designs require both skill and precision.”
