Every winter brings with it the season's top coat trends. While the dropping temperatures and dark evenings might fill you with existential dread, a statement coat is one thing to really get excited about in the colder months. A good coat is the cheat code to winter dressing, because it doesn't really matter what's underneath. It's a marker of taste that you broadcast to the world, while keeping the elements at bay.
This autumn and winter coat trends lean into style without compromising utility and comfort, whether through details like funnel necks or materials like faux fur. And whether you’d rather dress like you live in the big city or the English countryside, these wool layers, puffer jackets, and trench coats will have you covered (literally). Update your outerwear rotation ahead of winter’s worst with our trend edit below.
Glamour’s 2025 coat trends wishlist
1. The faux fur coat
So many labels – Chloé, Valentino, Simone Rocha, Alaïa, you name it – showed faux fur this season, proposing the luxurious (and cruelty-free) material as the perfect finishing touch to any cold-weather ensemble. Play around with different lengths, finishes, and silhouettes; whether you prefer a cropped, collarless topper or a floor-skimming maxi, these coats work wonders against frigid temps. Style them with black trousers and loafers for a sophisticated, low-effort look, or go with a miniskirt, fleece-lined leggings, and knee-high boots to go full boho.
2. The chocolate brown coat
Without question, deep, rich brown is the colour trend of the season. And while you should also add it to your boots and bags, it might just look its best in the form of an oversized outer layer. It’s just as easy to wear as classic black (and looks great with the shade), but is just different enough to stand out – perfect for anyone who likes to make a subtle statement. Pair it with black boots or ballet flats in shades like lavender or red.

3. The checkered coat
A huge portion of the population (Glamour editors included) wants to look like denizens of the English countryside right now: just peep the checked outerwear on the Burberry, Ralph Lauren, and Missoni runways. Earthy, understated heritage plaids are at the forefront of the trend heading into winter, so feel free to style your pick with subdued shades like brown, charcoal and black to stick to a more provincial look.
4. The wool cocoon
Prefer your winter layers as cosy as possible? One of winter’s most exciting emerging silhouettes is the cocoon coat – our term for the soft, sculptural woollen pieces that fit right in with the offbeat brand of minimalism that’s so popular among fashion people right now. Pulling together trends like stand collars, exaggerated arms and built-in scarves, these gems lend any ensemble an editorial air – perfect for when you want to feel like a toasty marshmallow, but not look like one.

5. The leopard coat
Khaite, Aknvas, Anna Sui and Saint Laurent all had leopard print layers front and centre for autumn. Animal-inspired patterns are enjoying a major moment right now, but it’s leopard (which was also trending last winter) that’s the easiest to find and style. Whether you’re picking up a cropped faux-fur bomber or a calf-hair trench, treat the print like a neutral and style it with all the browns, blacks, creams and blues in your wardrobe.
6. The pop of colour
Great news for those of us who refuse to blend in: much of the year’s best outerwear has been rendered in standout shades like grass green, rich purple, and preppy maroon. Fashion month was awash with bold hues, while autumn/winter runways from houses like Hermès and Fendi didn’t shy away from candy-coloured coats. All you need to do is pick a tone that speaks to you; lean in with a monochromatic ensemble or let your outerwear do all the talking by sticking to black or white separates. Easy!
