I know a lot of Fashion Editors – and every one of them has the same approach to staying warm all winter: with the best fleece-lined leggings. Ever wondered how the they don't freeze to death while looking chic? Truthfully, from November through ‘til April, they're all donning a pair of fleece lined tights or leggings underneath their wide-leg jeans, tailored trousers and denim maxi skirts. They're staying warm; wearing the same great outfits while doing it.

It's official: the material which used to be reserved to lining the insides of our jackets and jumpers has grown up; now, lining our best leggings too. Though they might feel like an outdated purchase, leggings were actually everywhere on the AW25/26 catwalks. Need proof? At Gucci, there were shimmering pairs sprinkled with rhinestones worn with highlighter tops and faux fur, meanwhile, at Diesel, the leggings and mini skirt duo made a return – with coordinating tops, and both were worn with heels.

Sure, I love the return of leggings for eveningwear – but it's the fleece lined cosy leggings that get my heart racing more these days. And now we know they're stylish, that's what we're here for.

What to look for? A pair of winter leggings that are stretchy, super comfortable and easy-to-style. They should be thinner than cashmere joggers but thicker than thermal leggings (not too bulky, but thick enough to keep you warm), and they should be opaque too. Oh, and don't spend too much. Most of the pairs in this round-up come in under £20.

Owning a few functional garments (read: the best thermals and gloves/hats/scarves) is crucial to beating winter. Of course, you could “put a thicker jumper on” as your mum would always suggest, wear higher denier tights or invest in an electric blanket, but, when plush fleece lined leggings exist, you shouldn't need to. Ahead, let me show you the pairs myself and my fellow Glamour editors have put to the test over the years.

How we tested the best fleece lined leggings:

Senior Commerce Writer, Georgia Trodd wearing the Lovall Winter Everyday High Waisted Leggings.

Sourcing the best fleece-lined leggings has been nothing short of a dream for Glamour's Senior Writers Georgia Trodd and Sophie Donovan, as well as Glamour's Commerce Picture Editor Néamh Randall. That said, they have not been easy on any of the styles; if a pair gets the seal of approval, it's because they've met their criteria.

We scored each pair of winter leggings on a few criteria: how opaque each style is, whether they washed well, and what the value-for-money was like. We commented on how easy they were to style, whether they actually kept us warm (or made us too hot!) and whether they sat high on the waist. No-one likes a pair of fleece-lined leggings that fall down.

We're here to tell you the good and the bad, so expect some pros and cons along the way – whether that's how well they fit, wash or if the sizing could be better.

Why you can trust my reviews:

I have been a Fashion Journalists for the best part of a decade, reviewing products for Glamour for the past four years. I've covered catwalks and designer trends and tested more practical purchases (fleece-lined leggings, work bags, the best backpacks included), so I know a thing or two about which brands to shop from.

1. Best Fleece-Lined Leggings Overall:

Winter Everyday High Waisted Leggings

Georgia Trodd wearing Lovall.

Why Georgia loves them: “I am definitely cold-blooded – so much so that it could be 30°C outside and I'll still find a reason to wear a jumper – so when winter comes all I want to do is wrap up and stay home. Lovall's Winter Everyday leggings have become my most-worn item since testing, and I'm already looking at what other colours I can adopt into my winter wardrobe. They're super thick, which is really important for me (I don't want people to see what colour my underwear is, TYVM), and they wash well. No bobbling yet!”

  • Tested by: Georgia Trodd, Senior Commerce Writer.
  • Size range: UK 6-28, available in regular, petite and tall lengths.
  • Material: 58% modal, 34% polyester, 8% elastane.
  • Colours: 10+ shades.
  • Pros: Best size range availability I've come across.
  • Cons: None from me!

2. The Runner-Up:

Heatgen™ Maximum Thermal Fleece Leggings

Sophie Donovan wearing Marks & Spencer.

Why Sophie loves them: “One thing my friends know about me: I could very easily take the title for ‘world’s sweatiest woman.’ But, come winter, I’m also the first one to complain that I’m a little bit chilly. Thankfully, these (budget-friendly) fleece leggings kept me at a comfortable temperature, not once making me feel clammy. Not at all see-through and pretty true to size, I had minimal complaints about M&S’s offering. I’d just love them in some slightly more exciting shades — maybe a khaki green or on-trend oxblood?”

  • Tested by: Sophie Donovan, Senior Commerce Writer.
  • Size range: UK 6-22.
  • Material: 55% acrylic, 37% viscose and 8% elastane.
  • Colours: Black, grey marl, dark chocolate, navy.
  • Pros: Added stretch for a comfortable fit.
  • Cons: There isn't currently a long or tall option.

Black Fleece Lined Thermal Footless Tights 1 Pair

Néamh Randall wearing Next.

Why Néamh loves them: “I'm currently pregnant, so comfort and warmth are key for me. One minute I'm too toasty, the next I'm freezing, and these fleece leggings are perfect for the latter. You'll prefer them to your joggers in no time, trust me. They're just slightly see-through, though, so I'd only wear them with your longest best knitwear.”

  • Tested by: Néamh Randall, Commerce Picture Editor.
  • Size range: XS-XL.
  • Material: 92% recycled polyester, 8% elastane.
  • Colours: Black.
  • Pros: Made with recycled materials.
  • Cons: A bit see-through.

Wear them with anything from sweatshirts and T-shirts to sports bras and outerwear, depending on where your day is headed. The elastic waistband is high-rise, too, so they have that non-slip appeal that we all want when we wear leggings. Well done, Alo – no wonder celebs, including Kendall Jenner, also rate the brand.

12. Best Sheer Fleece-Lined Leggings

140 Denier Thermal Sheer Fleece Tights

Why we love them: Alright, so they're not technically leggings and definitely more fleece lined tights, but you could 100% similarly wear them (beneath trousers, jeans, dresses etc) to keep you warm when temperatures drop. They're 140 denier, so they're certainly thick enough, and they're ideal if you don't like the thick opaque look of leggings but still want the warmth that fleece lined leggings give you.

  • Size range: S-L.
  • Material: 49% polyester, 36% polyamide and 15% elastane.
  • Colours: Black mix.
  • Pros: They're really stretchy and make it look like you're wearing sheer tights due to the super soft fleece lining being beige.
  • Cons: One review said they experienced pilling/bobbling.

13. Best Winter Leggings For Work

  • Colours: Black.
  • Pros: Machine washable.
  • Cons: Size availability.

Do fleece lined leggings keep you warm?

They sure do. Adhering to their name, fleece lined leggings feature a fluffy/brushed fabric interior that traps the heat in to keep you warm on the coldest days. So, whether you're planning on staying in and hibernating this season (which is exactly where you'll find me), or you've got a few ski trips booked in and you need to wear them underneath the best ski clothes or best ski jacket, you'll be eternally grateful for investing in a pair. It's rare that functionality co-exists with fashion, so I would say embrace it with open arms – especially if you're not keen on all the heavy layers winter brings with it. These simple leggings are the answer to keeping you warm with minimal effort. Something I, for one, will always get on board with to allow a few more minutes wrapped in my duvet before the commute.
