Is The White Lotus cursed? All the on-set drama, as Helena Bonham Carter exits season 4

As fans of The White Lotus will know, these five-star luxury resorts dotted around the globe are anything but relaxing – with a different guest popping their clogs every damn season. But, if recent events (and celebrity gossip columns) are anything to go by, it seems the drama extends beyond the screen and that the set itself is cursed.

The latest fatality? Helena Bonham Carter. And she lasted just one week.

Although the reason for her untimely departure hasn't been fully disclosed, a spokesperson for HBO told Deadline last week that the acting titan's vision "did not align" with Mike White's, the show's creator.

“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks,” they said.

Now, I can't say I'm too sad about this, as THE Laura Dern has since graciously stepped in her place, but it does have me wondering: what on earth is the issue with The White Lotus?!

And if you're not asking yourself that same question, you just might after revisiting the drama of previous seasons…

Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins' ‘beef’

Playing the fated pair of Chelsea and Rick in season 3 of The White Lotus, Aimee Lou Wood and Walton Goggins had lots going on in their storyline, from letting loose a bunch of poisonous snakes and grabbing mini doughnuts from the breakfast buffet to a dramatic shoot-out in the season finale (I'm still not over over it). But what somewhat overshadowed their superb acting skills was their alleged beef off-camera.

You see, while Goggins was going hell for leather on his posts about his co-star, positively gushing about their tragic final scene, fans spotted that Wood had quietly unfollowed her on-screen partner on Instagram (though, I should point out, she still followed his eyewear account).

Naturally, the Internet ran with this minuscule detail, concluding, of course, that there must be some drama – some ulterior motive behind the move, despite both stars saying “there is no feud” between them.

“I adore, I love this woman madly, and she is so important to me,” Goggins told Variety in an interview.

Wood, meanwhile, was forced to ask: "Why is everyone obsessing over Instagram? That is irrelevant. We don’t give a shite about Instagram,” she said. “Why not have conversations about the story and Rick and Chelsea and enjoy it?”

She does now follow Walton Goggins on Instagram (and his eyewear brand).

Jason Isaacs is not stupid

Of course, while Jason Isaacs' comments after the whole debacle with his season 3 cast mates were meant to diffuse the situation, they did, in reality, fan the flames and pique viewers' interest further.

“Like anywhere you go for the summer, there’s friendships, there’s romances, there’s arguments, there’s cliques that form and break and reform and stuff like that,” he said on an episode of SiriusXM’s The Happy Hour in April 2025. “I’m careful. I’m not stupid. I look at the Internet.”

Mind you, he did also refer to the set of The White Lotus as a “theatre camp, but to some extent an open prison camp” in an interview with The Guardian. Yikes!

Meghann Fahy and Leo Woodall found love in a hopeless place

Having met on season 2 of The White Lotus in 2022, Meghann Fahy and Leo Woodall's “drama” is the good variety – because the gorgeous couple are still going strong.

In true Sutton Brady fashion (if you haven't watched The Bold Type, who even are you?) Fahy revealed on an episode of Penn Badgley's Pocrushed podcast earlier this year that it was she who made the first move.

“I was there [in Sicily] before him for a bit,” Fahy said, explaining that Woodall only comes into the scene in episode 3. “When he got there, I saw him in the little area where we would have lunch and I gave him my number.”

“I was like, ‘You’re new here,’” she went on. “I totally know how it is to show up late to something. It’s sucks. It’s like everyone’s been at camp without you, and they already made friends, and it can be quite vulnerable.”

However, despite her kind gesture, Woodall “never did anything with it.”

It wasn't until “months later” that they finally got together. “He was like, ‘I didn’t know that you were interested in me,’ and I was like, ‘I gave you my number. How did you not know that?’” she said. “He was like, ‘I didn’t think you meant that. I didn’t think you actually were giving me your number because you wanted to be friends with me.’ I was like, ‘Why else?’”

Please don't stop the music, Cristóbal Tapia de Veer

When season 3 dropped, fans were quick to notice the iconic theme tune had changed from seasons past – and although it was a shock, it soon grew on people and became respected in its own right.

However, before the third instalment even came out on HBO, composer Cristóbal Tapia de Veer quit the show, telling The New York Times: “I feel like this was, you know, a rock ’n’ roll band story. I was like, OK, this is like a rock band I’ve been in before where the guitar player doesn’t understand the singer at all.”

He then subsequently posted the original, longer version of his opening theme (that contained parts of the tune from seasons 1 and 2) on YouTube.

Mike White responded to Tapia de Veer's comments, calling them a “PR campaign” and saying that it was “kind of a bitch move” to have the interview come out a few days before the show's finale.

“I don’t think he respected me. He basically wants people to know that he’s edgy and dark and I’m, I don’t know, like I watch reality TV," he said to Howard Stern.

Seasons 1-3 of The White Lotus are available to stream on NOW. Season 4 is expected to be released in 2027.
