At this point, all we can think about is The White Lotus, even when we’re in that waiting period between seasons that feels like a casual decade. The hit HBO show had us hooked from that first deadly season, and has since taken us from the glitz of Sicily to the tropical paradise of Koh Samui. It tops its star-studded cast each season, and season three included Aimee Lou Wood, Leslie Bibb, Carrie Coon and Parker Posey. Oh, it was good.

Season four of The White Lotus is now underway, with creator Mike White back after his stint on Survivor season 50. This time, we’re heading to France, or more specifically, the Cannes Film Festival. Filming has taken place across Paris, Monaco and the French Riviera, with a cast that includes Steve Coogan, AJ Michalka, Alexander Ludwig, and Marissa Long.

But just one week into production, one of the season’s most high-profile stars has officially left the series… and has already been replaced. Here’s everything we know so far about The White Lotus season four drama.

Why did Helena Bonham Carter leave The White Lotus?

Yep, it’s with a heavy heart that we confirm that Helena Bonham Carter has left The White Lotus season four, just one week into filming.

Bonham Carter was the first confirmed star of the season and one of the most high-profile names in the cast, known for her acclaimed roles across film and television, including appearances in projects like Harry Potter, Sweeney Todd, Enola Holmes and The King's Speech.

So why did she abruptly exit The White Lotus? According to a spokesperson for the Mike White project, her character “did not align on set” after filming the first few scenes.

“With filming just underway on Season 4 of The White Lotus, it had become apparent that the character which Mike White created for Helena Bonham Carter did not align once on set,” a spokesperson for HBO confirmed in a statement to Deadline.

“The role has subsequently been rethought, is being rewritten and will be recast in the coming weeks,” they continued.

“HBO, the producers and Mike White are saddened that they won’t get to work with her, but remain ardent fans and very much hope to work with the legendary actress on another project soon.”

This isn’t the first time something like this has happened on the HBO series. Back in season three, the role of Chloe, Greg Hunt’s model girlfriend, was originally played by actress Francesca Corney. However, producers later decided to recast the role mid-production after making character development changes, ultimately casting an older actress instead. As a result, Corney, 32, was replaced by 38-year-old Charlotte Le Bon.

Who is replacing Helena Bonham Carter on The White Lotus?

Yep, there’s no time to waste with the entire cast out in France waiting to shoot, so The White Lotus has already moved quickly to replace Helena Bonham Carter.

Oscar winner Laura Dern, a longtime collaborator and friend of creator Mike White, has officially joined the series. The pair previously worked together on the 2009 film Year of the Dog and the HBO series Enlightened. Dern will play a brand-new character, currently being developed and written specifically for her by White.

And this actually marks something of a return for Dern. The actor previously made a small appearance in season two of The White Lotus, where she did an uncredited voice cameo as Abby, the estranged wife of Dominic Di Grasso (Michael Imperioli).

This time, though, we’ll finally get to see her on screen in full and credited accordingly.

We’ll keep you updated on all things related to The White Lotus season four as it unfolds.
