As the high waist creeps back into fashion, you may be asking yourself: what shoes to wear with ribcage jeans? High-waisted jeans are being reinvented under the name “ribcage jeans”, so called because they're supposed to literally graze your ribcage.
There's been much discourse over the state of jeans. Are they skinny? Wide-legged? Low-waisted? High? You're not the only one that's confused. Low-waisted jeans came into vogue with the rising popularity of '00s style in recent years. Lately, however, we're seeing the return of the high waist.
There's something very mid-2010s about a super high-waisted jean. It reminds me of the all-consuming popularity of the “mom” and “boyfriend” jeans at the time. (I'll be so honest, I still don't know what the difference is between them to this day.)
One thing's for certain though, they look good on everyone. I hate to use the word “flattering”, since it draws associations with slimming yourself down and hiding yourself away. But, the reality is that not all of us are comfortable with our bellies on show to the world a la Paris Hilton's uber-low, hipbone-revealing jeans. If you are, more power to you, girl. But I'm certainly not. In this case, high-waisted jeans are your best friend.
But what shoes to wear with them? We've got some suggestions for you.
Shop our favourites:
Loafers
Loafers are the shoe of the moment, especially the super flat-soled variety in a soft, black leather. You can go classic, of course, but the pair below adds an extra fun touch to your outfit. The animal print works perfectly with a longer jean because they can still hold their own without being totally overshadowed by the excess fabric.
Normcore trainers
Why not go full 2016 and style your high-waisted jeans with normcore trainers? If you remember the mid 2010s, you'll know how much of a chokehold normie style had on fashion. Trainers that looked like they could have been your dad's old gym shoes were a particular favourite.
Ankle boots
Ankle boots are another type of shoe that look great with a longer-legged pair of jeans. We'd recommend black leather as the most versatile style that will look great season after season. But if you want something a little more trendy, why not opt for some cowboy-style boots?
Pointy-toed shoes
A pointy toe looks excellent with this type of jean because it peeks ever-so-slightly out from under the excess fabric. It's also just an objectively glamorous shoe, even with a cropped leg. You can opt for pointy or almond-toed flats, which have been having a moment recently, or their more fabulous but less comfortable cousin, the pointy-toed heel.
