If you've been bracing yourself against January's arctic temperatures, you'll probably have noticed a particular hair hack making the rounds: the ‘turtleneck bob’, also known as the ‘turtleneck tuck’.
Only this morning I was struck by how the only women in my train carriage who didn't look dishevelled in today's gale force winds had artfully tucked their strands into the funnel-neck collar of a jumper, trench coat or even just a scarf.

A hairstyle popularised by Victoria Beckham, the turtleneck bob involves either pulling a roll-neck jumper over your head and leaving the ends of your hair tucked inside. Or rolling the hair under and securing the look with the collar.
It's essentially a style for looking chic in bad weather – and looking effortless in the process if you have a jawline-grazing bob, lob or long hair.
It's also a quick and easy way to create a faux bob. “The turtleneck tuck is a trick that we’ve used in pictures over the years to give a ‘graphic’ look to hair, where it doesn’t actually exist," says top hairstylist Luke Hersheson.
But while it sounds simple enough to create – and doesn't exactly smack of perfection – it's worth heeding some insider advice to nail the look and take it from the blustery streets or ski slopes to cocktail hour.

One trick, says Luke, is to balance heft on the crown with sleek, shiny strands. “Hair needs a nice “sheen” for this look and I would recommend more of a luxe blow-dry to give hair a little bit of height at the front, so it feels more '90s supermodel. This will help give hair a little bit more volume when tucking it in."

To prep the hair for an effortlessly smooth, bouncy blowout, Luke relies on the Zhoosh Foam – a hybrid dry shampoo/texturising foam – to give roots extra oomph. To keep the look approachable and effortless, Luke also recommends pulling out a few face framing strands.
Aside from the weather, static is likely to be the biggest issue for longer hair types to overcome, so you may want to use a smoothing product to tame flyaways (Larry King Flyaway With Me Kit and Fenty Hair The Controlling Type are both good).

Ultimately, the turtleneck bob scoops your hair up into a fresh, no-commitment hairstyle. "Sometimes, in winter, wispy hair can feel a bit insipid on top of big chunky knits, so tucking your hair into your jumper gives you a nice graphic shape around your face and provides a bit of framing.”
