How glorious are bank holidays? Just as the Sunday scaries are setting in and you're dreading work the next morning, the realisation that it's a bank holiday Monday instantly turns your mood right around. Whether you like to spend them with friends having lunch and drinks in the park, hanging out with friends or family or having a mooch around some charity shops after picking up a matcha, there's no right or wrong way to spend a bank holiday other than full-on enjoying yourself.
So, imagine our delight when we found out that next year, there'll be a week where we'll only have to be in the office for THREE DAYS, all thanks to bank holidays.
Yup, next Christmas, you can expect a whopping five whole days off as January 1st falls on a Saturday, meaning we'll get a ‘substitute’ day off on Monday, 3rd January. This means that, even if you only use two days of annual leave on the 30th and 31st, you'll still get ten whole days off work, letting you rest up and spend time with your loved ones (or flying solo) between the 25th and the 3rd of January. Sign us up.
Not only that, but spring 2027 has a few bank holidays to take note of, too. Not only will we be off on Monday, 4th May for Easter, but we'll also have the Spring bank holiday on Monday, 25th May to look forward to, too. Oh, we can't wait!
You might be wondering why we get so many bank holidays in 2027, and the answer is mostly down to ‘substitute’ holidays. What does this mean? Well, when a standard bank holiday falls on a weekend, the day off has to be carried over into the following week.
Luck would have it that many of the bank holidays in 2027 fall on weekends, which adds to these additional days off during the week. The Government states on their website: “If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday. Your employer does not have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays. Bank holidays might affect how and when your benefits are paid.”
