Invernay Castle, Scotland
Kate's journey to Scotland in season 2 also took filming up there as well, which was a favourite experience for executive producer Janice Williams.
“We shot at Inveraray Castle in Scotland, which, as a born and bred Scottish person, I was so proud to do,” she told Netflix's TUDUM. “It’s actually the first time I’ve worked in filmmaking in my home country, and it felt like a real homecoming to me.”
St Paul's Cathedral
For four days, the Netflix series filmed at the cathedral as pat of MP Merritt Grove’s funeral scenes in episode 2.
“Nobody has ever closed St Paul’s for four full days, which we did,” supervising location manager E.J. Richards told Netflix's TUDUM. “Not even the queen.”
She added that St Paul’s Cathedral was “one of the most difficult locations to shoot, even for a day” because of the high number of visitors and tourists around. “It’s world-renowned,” she said. “Every day they have services, they have tourists, they have local people that use the church.”
The show's producer Debora Cahn told Netflix's TUDUM that they were even able to borrow the cathedral's robes. “The robes our clergy wore were lent to us by the cathedral,” she said. “It was the fourth time they'd ever been worn, including Winston Churchill's funeral, and Margaret Thatcher's. It was breathtaking.”
Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich
Some scenes for the funeral were also filmed at Greenwich's Old Royal Naval College, one to visit for gorgeous views over London.
US Embassy, London
Netflix has confirmed that The Diplomat did actually film the exterior as well as inside the lobby of the real US Embassy in London, while the interior scenes set in the ambassador’s office in were shot on a sound stage at London North Studios.
Wilton House, Salisbury
This country house was used to film the Prime Minister Trowbridge’s formal dinner. It has also been used as a filming location for Rivals, Pride & Prejudice, The Crown and Bridgerton.
Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire
The ancestral home of former Prime Minister Winston Churchill was also used for exterior shots and interior scenes where the characters are mingling at Prime Minister Trowbridge’s formal dinner.
Wrotham Park, Hertfordshire
Kate and Hal’s home, named Winfield House, is filmed at Wrotham Park in Hertfordshire.
“It feels like a family home, which is why I think it feels so inviting,” location manager E.J. Richards told Netflix's TUDUM. “You’re in someone’s home that they actually live in. It’s not a museum, so it has a certain energy about it.”
Foreign Office, London
As well as filming at One Great George Street (Westminster’s corporate conference and events venue), The Diplomat filmed interior and exterior shots at the real Foreign Office.
“That is a genuine part of the Westminster controlled environment, so [it was] very exciting to be given access,” Richards said.
Harefield House, Hillingdon
The historic Harefield House was used to film the interiors for 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister Trowbridge’s residence and office.
Glen Torridon, Scotland
This stunning hiking spot in the Highlands was used as a backdrop for filming The Diplomat's Scotland-based scenes. Just beautiful.
