It’s here! Taylor Swift’s 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, is finally ours to devour.

Throughout the last leg of the 2024 Eras Tour, fans were eagerly awaiting the release of Reputation (Taylor’s Version). I even got clowned into thinking that it was going to be announced during the last Wembley show, thanks to all the TikTok theories. Taylor instead surprised everyone earlier this year by announcing that she had bought back her own masters following years of re-recording albums such as Red and 1989. With this news came a detailed letter disclosing that Reputation was not at the point of re-record, even mentioning that she wasn’t sure if she could even touch it. New music at this point didn’t feel on this horizon.

That all changed when Taylor announced The Life of a Showgirl while making her debut on her *now* fiancé, Travis Kelce’s podcast New Heights on 12th August. Obviously, fans know this is now typical Taylor fashion to announce upcoming music in places of significance. For example, last year’s The Tortured Poet’s Department was announced after Taylor's ‘Album of the Year’ win for 2022’s Midnights.

Surprisingly, the album was made during her breaks on the European leg of The Era’s Tour last year. Swift mentioned on the podcast that she would fly to Sweden to write and record the songs, alongside producer Max Martin. Now, after a year of keeping it a secret, it’s out in the open and arguably it’s Taylor’s most joyful album to date – she really said no tears this year.

Below we unpack all the lyrics, song meanings and rumoured Easter eggs in The Life of a Showgirl:

1. The Fate of Ophelia

Taylor is framing herself as a modern-day interpretation of William Shakespeare’s Ophelia from his acclaimed tragedy Hamlet for the album cover.

She sings, “I swore my loyalty to me, myself and I…right before you lit my sky up”, which references Swift’s relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. The pair have been together since 2023, following her break-up from British actor Joe Alwyn.

In the song, Taylor mentions that Travis “saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia”. In Literature, due to Hamlet’s actions, Ophelia enters a state of madness that leads to her drowning.

Shakespeare x Taylor = Dreamy pop heaven!

2. Elizabeth Taylor

“Be my NY, when Hollywood hates me”

Swift’s 2014 album 1989 is a love album for her New York, where she seems to feel safe. Over the span of her career, Taylor has had to endure being a public enemy number one purely for her talent, and for trying to have a personal life in the limelight.

Elizabeth Taylor’s own reputation was often under scrutiny by the press due to their interest in her love life. Taylor has been experiencing this since she first stood in the limelight for the first time when she was 16.

3. Opalite

In spiritual terms, Opalite can bring inner peace and calm, while also emotionally healing. Additionally, it can enhance communication and promote growth.

Lyrics such as ”I had a bad habit of missing my lover's past, my brother used to call it” and “all the perfect couples said ‘when you know you know, and when you don’t, you don’t”, all appear to be a reflection on her relationship traits.

In previous relationships, Taylor has only used her songs to reference bad break-ups or tabloid rumours about them. In ‘Opalite’, Taylor appears to reference her own growth now that she is with Travis.

4. Father Figure

A George Michael credit and sample?? Okay, slay!

”Leave it with me, I’ll protect the family”, is a clear look into how much Taylor treasures her family unit.

Over the course of her almost 20-year career (insane), her parents have always been by her side during every album release, press hounding and supported her through travelling the world on tour. They were spotted in the crowd numerous times during Taylor’s successful Eras Tour run last year, passing out guitar picks to fans and taking selfies.

5. Eldest Daughter

Relating back to ‘Father Figure’, this track appears to be about Taylor’s relationship with her older brother, Austin.

Swift sings, “I’m not bad bitch, and this isn’t sabotage, but I’m never going to let you down, I’m never going to leave you out.” Austin is rarely seen out in public, but the pair are believed to be super close.

6. Ruin The Friendship

When the track listing for the album was released, Swifties immediately wanted to claim this song would detail the pop-star’s falling out with former bestie, Blake Lively.

However, it's the complete opposite…

Rather than disclosing about fallouts and new enemies, Taylor goes back to school and sings about regrets about not pursuing a former friend romantically. She says, “My advice is always ruin the friendship, better that than regret it all the time, should’ve kissed you anyway”. The person in question is unknown, but she references her childhood and long-time friend Abigail, who was the one to break the ‘bad news’.

7. Actually Romantic

“I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’, when the coke’s got you brave” erm SCREAMING!!!!

A Charli XCX diss track? After all, it sounds very familiar to Charli’s hit song, ‘Everything is Romantic’.

On her critically acclaimed 2024 album Brat, it was rumoured that Charli had written ‘Symphony is a Knife’ about Taylor, despite once being friendly – Charli supported Taylor on her Reputation Tour in 2018. Things seemed to be okay between the pair when Taylor gave a glowing quote for a profile on Charli for New York Magazine, with even a remix of the Brat track rumoured between the pair (instead, Ariana Grande was the featured collaborator).

8. Wi$h List

There has been a long-standing discord that Taylor is power-hungry, and will even sabotage other artists and their upcoming releases. Though it seems this track disproves the theory.

She sings about fellow industry folks wanting a ‘critical smash Palm d’Or’ or ‘an Oscar on their bathroom floor’, whereas she states she wants ‘a couple of kids’. While Taylor is everywhere in the media, it’s clear that all she wants in the next chapter is contentment and a family.

”We’ll tell the world to leave us the fuck alone, and they do, wow.”

9. Wood

It’s giving confident, sultry and happy!

”His love was the key that opened my thighs” is arguably one of Taylor’s most sexual lyrics yet. However, it just proves how assured and joyful she feels in her relationship with Travis.

10. CANCELLED!

Gagged! Reputation era is back in full throttle.

I understand why Travis called Cancelled! A banger, because honestly, I was internally screaming at 5:30 am.

Now, this is the Blake Lively track we were all waiting patiently for. “Good thing I like my friends cancelled, I like ‘em cloaked in Gucci and in scandal,” appears to reference Lively’s highly publicised lawsuit against It Ends With Us director, Justin Baldoni.

Cracks began in their friendship when Lively described Swift as one of her ‘dragons’ in a text that was provided in a legal document for the case.

11. Honey

“And when anyone called me ‘Lovely’, they were findin’ ways not to praise me, but you say it like you’re in awe of me” (!!!!!)

In previous tracks about former partners, there’s always been sadness towards that period, but in Honey, she appears more content than ever. Arguably, it could be because it seems her relationship with Travis is more equal than previous ones - both supportive of each other’s careers and showing up for one another.

We love to see it!

12. The Life of a Showgirl (feat Sabrina Carpenter)

A dreamy duet we didn’t know we needed!

The title album track feels like a sister to The Tortured Poets Department, Clara Bow, as it references a representation of being a pop-star.

“Sequins are forever and now i know the life of a showgirl, babe, wouldn’t have it any other way,” the duo sing together. Sabrina is a good fit for the collaboration as she has long been influenced by Swift’s artistry and performing style. The two grew close when Carpenter opened up for Taylor for some legs of the Era’s Tour.

Ending with an outro which seemingly sounds very much like the closing messages from the tour last year will have Swifties getting emotional. A well-fitting ending to the album by the showgirl of our generation.
