The denim-on-denim look has come a long way since the days of Britney Spears and Justin Timberlake in their matchy-matching jean looks. Just see Sydney Sweeney's latest look for evidence of how to make the Canadian tuxedo feel high-fashion.
The Canadian or Texas tuxedo, AKA a denim jacket or top with a matching pair of jeans, used to be something of a fashion punchline, but things have changed, and now wearing denim from head to toe can be considered chic, not corny.
Sweeney wore the denim-on-denim outfit for a day in New York City, and it stands out for a few reasons. Her jacket isn't a traditional jean jacket, but rather a cropped, collarless style reminiscent of a classic Chanel jacket or J. Crew's popular “Lady” jacket. The front pockets and subtly flared sleeves elevate a wardrobe basic. The Anyone But You star paired the piece with flared jeans in a slightly different denim wash so it doesn't look like she's wearing a full-on suit.
Sweeney's choice of accessories also elevate the humble Canadian tux; she skipped more obviously western choices like cowboy boots in favour of black pointed-toe heels, then added a black bag with grommeted straps and a pair of sleek wraparound sunglasses; the vibe was Y2K but elevated, blending elements of the 2000s (flared jeans, pointed-toe heels, grommets) with the timeless silhouette of her jacket. She wore her hair styled in loose, easy waves and skipped a full manicure in favor of a shiny topcoat. Less yeehaw, more Sydney Sweeney — and so easy to recreate on your own!
