Renée Zellweger layered a dress over trousers, and actually, this is so cute for spring

Did we kill this trend too soon?

Bridget Jones isn’t the only thing Renée Zellweger is bringing back from the early 2000s. She’s also bringing back the divisive dress-over-trousers trend. How do we feel about this?

For the February 5 photo call in Rome for Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy—the fourth (you heard me) film in the Bridget Jones franchise—the actress’ look had a rather retro twist on menswear. The actor wore what looks like a black, strapless, blazer-minidress/tunic over a slouchy blouse with a dress-shirt-style striped pattern. Under that, she also wore black, wide-leg dress trousers and cinched the whole ensemble at the waist with a brown belt.

For footwear, Zellweger opted for classic black pumps, and she kept her hair equally simple with a basic, very Bridget-coded messy updo. Intriguingly, Zellweger’s whole look appears to be jewellery-free.

The fourth Bridget Jones movie sees our Bridget joining Tinder after the death of her husband. While on the apps, Bridget apparently meets and has “hot sex” with a 30-year-old man, and is also visited by Colin Firth flashbacks. And yes, Hugh Grant will also be returning (after being presumed dead). The previous three films saw Bridget first fall in love with Firth’s uptight-with-a-heart-of-gold character Mark Darcy, and choose him again after a Thai prison misadventure in Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. In Bridget Jones’s Baby in 2016, Bridget and Mark are divorced when Bridget becomes unexpectedly pregnant with what could be Mark’s or Jack’s (played by actor Patrick Dempsey) baby. In the end, the baby turns out to be Mark’s and she and Mark remarry.

Apparently Renée Zellweger is really leaning into the whole throwback aspect of this press tour. For the Mad About the Boy premiere in London, the actor wore a fuchsia, strapless, vintage Balmain gown that was actually older than the Bridget Jones franchise itself, having debuted on the runway in 2000.
