Have we we entered a peak remake era? The movie that brought Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie together, Mr & Mrs Smith, has had the TV series treatment, starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. And there's talk of a second season already.
Reviews have been positive, with one calling it an “honest look at marriage through the fantastic lens of spies”, and fans buzzing that Donald Glover has “done it again” and describing the series as “dangerously good”.
While we won't spoil anything, we do know that season one was left on a cliffhanger. So will there be a Mr & Mrs Smith season 2?
Well, we know that the series has not yet been officially renewed for a second outing. However the show's co-creator Francesca Sloane has already expressed that she'd love to do a second season, but has remained neutral on whether that might be happening.
The Lindsay Lohan romantic comedy canon is about to welcome another movie to its ranks.
“I think that there’s definitely a lot more story to tell here,” Sloane told EW. “And I think that we definitely feel like this is a fully satisfied story if it were to just live on its own. But it definitely has more legs to keep going, that’s for sure.”
She continues: “The entire season is attempting to subvert the genre while still being really satisfying to people who love the movie, and I think [they] will be incredibly pleased with the way that our finale wraps up. I feel like we've really earned the finale in terms of its gloriousness.
“I also feel like people who have never even heard of the original IP will watch that and feel like it is a well-rounded, exciting, shoot-'em-up romance with a really interesting ending – it’s something that will have a lot of people talking.”

The official plot synopsis for the TV series is as follows: "In this version of Mr. & Mrs. Smith, two lonely strangers land jobs working for a mysterious spy agency that offers them a glorious life of espionage, wealth, world travel and a dream brownstone in Manhattan. The catch? New identities in an arranged marriage as Mr. and Mrs. John and Jane Smith.
“Now hitched, John and Jane navigate a high-risk mission every week while also facing a new relationship milestone. Their complex cover story becomes even more complicated when they catch real feelings for each other. What's riskier: espionage or marriage?”
Is it different to the original movie?
So yes, the key difference is between the Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie original is that this iteration sees the titular couple married for the purposes of their mission, whereas Pitt and Jolie's characters were married and are both unaware that their partner is a spy.

What have the team behind Mr and Mrs Smith said about it so far?
“I’m not a big fan of remakes, so this was kind of a big deal to kind of take it on,” Donald Glover told Entertainment Tonight. “Once I saw the original, I was like, ‘This is a good date movie.’ And I was like, ‘Maybe I could make a good date show out of it?’ Like, you know, something me and my wife could watch together.”
The actor revealed that he even “reached out to Brad” while preparing for the role. “Brad was like, you know, he just Brad Pitt-ed his way out of it,” Glover recalled. “I was like, ‘I just need some tips,’ and he just charmed his way out of it. He was like, ‘Oh, you’ll do great, kid.’ That kind of thing.”
He also opened up about Phoebe Waller-Bridge's departure from the project, as she was originally set to co-write and star as Jane (Mrs Smith) in the series.
"I think because we were friends and I really liked Phoebe and we’d worked together ... it’s a divorce in a weird way," Glover told The Hollywood Reporter. “You’re like, 'Oh s---, this should have worked.' And this is just me, being honest, but I think a good relationship is one where you don’t waver from the extremely uncomfortable. And I don’t know if we were ever going to get to a place where we could be completely brutal to each other.”
