You might think that Christmas - what with it arriving at the same time every year - would no longer come as a surprise, but it seems that somehow every single December a huge portion of us find ourselves in a mad last-minute scramble to get everything together with just a week to go.

We wish we could be that person who writes a list of ideas in January, has everything bought by March, wrapped by October (while the Christmas cards are also being sealed and sent) and sitting pretty underneath a perfectly-decorated Christmas tree by the end of November.

We wish we knew exactly what to get everyone and didn't have to WhatsApp them the weekend before to just ask exactly what they want.

We wish we weren't contemplating gifting these presents in their original cardboard delivery boxes instead of wrapping this year.

But would it really be Christmas without a little last minute panic? We think that the 'secret magical joy' of Christmas day is actually just the relief that all that pre-Christmas shopping chaos is over.
