Kate Middleton in bell-bottoms? In white? With matching shoes, too?
Only the brave wear head-to-toe white, and the Princess of Wales certainly has the ability to take these tricky outfit elements and make them work. As we've come to expect, her chosen outfit to host her annual Westminster Christmas carol service this week was, once again, pristine.
Pairing a beautiful coat by bespoke tailor Chris Kerr with a knitted sweater by Kiltane, trousers by Holland Cooper, earrings by Van Cleef & Arpels and a bag by Strathberry, Kate is nothing if not loyal to her favourite brands.
But it was the Princess' heels which really caught our attention, since they successfully tick off one of the season's hottest trends.
If your shoe could potentially puncture a football you're on the right track.
Opting for a pointed pair of Gianvito Rossi pumps in pale suede, it seems Kate may have been reading our autumn/winter trend reports – since the very hottest shoe look of the season is similarly angular, with sharp points dominating every runway from Loewe to Versace, Philosophy Di Lorenzo Serafini, Bottega Veneta and Prada.
We'd argue that her choice of shoe pulls the outfit together perfectly, giving her signature sophisticated, elegant look which is at the same time entirely modern.
Of course, white shoes haven't always been the pinnacle of high fashion. In fact, they were once seen as something of a sartorial faux pas…
The formula is simple:
- Keep it tonal – opt for similar shades, so the shoes don't stand out excessively or distract.
- Opt for trousers that cover the foot slightly – again, so that they don't take on too much prominence.
- Add elevated outerwear – a chic coat is capable of transforming everything.
