Why did Bobby Berk leave Queer Eye?

Brent was introduced as Bobby Berk's replacement a few months following Berk's statement announcing his departure from the reality show. In a post on Instagram featuring photos from his time on Queer Eye, he said:

“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce that season 8 will be my final season on Queer Eye. It’s not been an easy decision to be at peace with, but a necessary one. Although my journey with Queer Eye is over, my journey with you is not. You will be seeing more of me very soon.”

On his reasons for leaving the Queer Eye gang, Bobby told Vanity Fair in 2024 “We thought we were done. Mentally and emotionally, I thought we all moved on. I know I did, and I started planning other things.”

He explained, “We’d just assumed that the show wouldn’t come back if we all didn’t come back. I was like, I’m not going to be having FOMO ’cause the show is not going to happen. I had become at peace with it.”

However while all of the Fab Five were initially on the same page with not returning, ultimately his four co-stars decided to sign on for the ninth season of the show, explaining “with only one of us not coming back, Netflix felt [it] could recast one person."

While Berk admits his frustration over the situation, saying there were “definitely emotions” about it all, he acknowledged “Each one of us had our reasons why we did what we did.”

He explained that ultimately, however, “All the plans that I had made when I thought we weren't coming back, I just wasn't willing to change those. I would have had to pump the brakes on multiple other projects that are already in process.”

Ok, so who is Queer Eye's Jeremiah Brent?

Jeremiah Brent is a 40-year-old interior designer and television personality. Brent founded his own New York and LA based design firm Jeremiah Brent Design (JBD) back in 2011, having also established his own lifestyle brand Atrio.

Brent is no stranger to TV, however, with the interior designer having previously appeared on Netflix's Say I Do as well as hosting Home Made Simple for OWN network. Oh, and did we mention he's had several appearances in Architectural Digest, Elle Decor, Wallpaper and countless others.

Ahead of Queer Eye season 9's arrival on Netflix, Jeremiah made an appearance on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen where he was asked if Bobby had given him any advice ahead of joining the show, with Brent explaining “I’ve never met him,” before adding “I think we did a panel once together. I’m not being shady. We’ve never met … Never spoken. But I have a tremendous amount of respect for what he did when he was here and what he contributed.”

On how he got into interior design, Brent said "Truth is, it was super unconventional and a lot by chance, and fully fuelled by passion,”

“I started furniture designing out of necessity when I was 19 years old. I couldn’t afford anything, so I went to the Goodwill and I bought everything I could afford and I modified it, and I started doing it for friends,” he explained.

After being asked to design friends' rooms he kept his interior design work up, with his major turning point coming after working as a styling associate for The Rachel Zoe Project.

Jeremiah Brent's partner and family

Jeremiah Brent has been married to his fellow interior designer Nate Berkus since 2014, with the pair being the first same-sex couple to wed at The New York public library!

In an interview with People Magazine, Brent described their meeting as “love at first sight”, adding “We both love each other, we love spending time with one another, we respect each other."
