A great mascara can boost your lashes tenfold, but the secret on how to get longer lashes is something that can be unlocked before you’ve even applied your trusty mascara and can leave your lashes feeling extra luscious.

So, what is the latest and greatest way to boost your lashes? Thankfully, it’s a super simple, yet effective, trick courtesy of Margot Robbie’s makeup artist. According to Pati Dubroff, the secret to boosted brows lies in – drumroll please – brown mascara.

While most people opt for classic black mascara, Pati maintains that the power actually lies in brown (but with a slight twist).

The trick is to coat your top lashes with black mascara and then use brown mascara for your lower lashes – which she says helps provide a more natural look and ensures they look ‘naturally defined’. Who knew?!

While that’s one simple way to unlock luscious lashes, keep reading for some more clever tips and tricks that will teach you how to get longer lashes at home...

Salt and pepper!

Now before you start reaching for the condiments, it’s not actual salt and pepper. Canadian lash expert, Joanna Keller, is making ‘salt and pepper’ lashes a thing. To achieve the look, she intersperses white lash extensions between classic black ones, which has an amplifying effect.

So, how does it work exactly? “The white lashes add dimension to a black lash set the same way any type of highlighting would work,” Keller says. In the same way that tattoos can be made to look brighter by adding hints of white to black-and-grey pieces, the same works for adding dimension to your lashes.

Beautician Joanne Dodds and celebrity makeup artist Elizabeth Rita, have shared their foolproof ways of boosting your lashes at home, without the need for eyelash extensions. “Before splashing out on expensive treatments, try these simple and cost-effective solutions that will help grow your eyelashes and keep them looking thick, healthy and natural,” says Joanne. So without further ado...

Check your diet

Focus on eating foods rich in protein and vitamins like fish, eggs, beans and soy protein, which will help your eyelashes to grow. The vitamin B complex known as Biotin helps to create longer and healthier eyelashes and hair, or chow down on lots of salmon, which is a great source of omega 3 fatty acids, helping to grow strong nails, shiny hair and long eyelashes.

Apply oils to your lashes

We love a natural beauty remedy here at Glamour, and you can boost your lashes with kitchen cupboard staples. How? Castor oil, olive oil, coconut oil and aloe vera all combined together and popped on every night with a clean disposable mascara wand will do the trick. “It takes persistence, but give it two months and you will see a massive difference, you will have thicker, healthier, longer and shinier lashes,” says Elizabeth.

There are also prescription-only treatments available, like Love Your Lashes from Skinfinity Cosmetic Clinic, which was developed after users of medication targeted at treating glaucoma began developing longer, fuller lashes.

Trim your eyelashes

This might sound terrifying but before you step away from the scissors, read on. “While it may seem counter-intuitive, it can really help,” says Joanne. Just as you’re encouraged to get a hair trim every 6-8 weeks, trimming the very ends of your lashes every two to three months will stimulate the follicle of your eyelashes and make them grow faster. Trust us!

Massage your eyelids

Massaging the eyelid area near the lashes helps increase blood flow and circulation, which will encourage your lashes to grow. Simple!

So, there you have it, any one (or combination) of these tips and tricks will help you on your way to lusciously long lashes.
