Weather forecast: snow flurries. Beauty forecast: flat hair. It's a cold snap beauty dilemma: how to keep warm and keep your hair on point? Here's how to beat beanie hair, thanks to pro tips from John Vial of Salon Sloane.

1. Start Clean

A warm scalp might be toasty under your beanie, but it encourages the distribution of your scalp's natural oils. "Shampoo and go grease-free for the best chance of your style staying put," says Vial. Note: you'll need the dry shampoo later so there's no easy cheat here.

2. Use Your Hat To Set Hair

Yup, your hat really can act as a styling aide on your commute, says Vial. "Apply a mousse through damp hair and blow-dry hair until it's 97 percent dry. For loose waves, divide hair into four sections. Twist each section until it coils in on itself, and pin with two Kirby grips in a cross. Cover with your hat and let hair set underneath. Then just remove your hat, unpin and smooth out the waves when you arrive."

3. Keep It Smooth

If you prefer a smooth finish, blow-dry hair until 97 percent dry and spritz with hairspray. "It's like ironing a shirt - it needs to be slightly damp to get the best crease-free finish," says Vial. "Gather hair into a loose ponytail with a hook elastic, then pin the ponytail flat around your head. Once secure cut the elastic to avoid any marks and cover with your hat. The head acts as a giant roller to give a subtle bouncy finish."

4. Plait Happy

No time to redo hair on arrival? "Braiding hair is the best all day option. Spritz with a hairspray to prevent fly-aways," says Vial.

5. Volume Blast

If you can't live without uplift, use a dry shampoo spray or, even better, a dust such as Pure Abundance Hair Potion , £22, Aveda. 'Shake dust over roots and massage in," says Vial. It'll also soak up any excess oils and amp up the volume.

6. Pick Your Hat

Choose your hat to suit your style, he advises. "For short curly hair, go for a soft scarf and tie loosely around the hair to avoid the squash. For smooth hair, a tight beanie will keep hair sleek, or for volume, opt for a slouchy beanie. Feeling game? Pop a roller in underneath."

Et voila - no more bad hair days, whatever the weather.
