House of the Dragon season 2 has introduced us to a few new faces since it began, and among them are several characters whose significance in the coming episodes has been heavily hinted at. On the list of ones to watch is Alyn.
Played by Abubaker Salim, Alyn of Hull is a sailor who works on Lord Corlys Velaryon's (played by Steve Toussaint) fleet alongside other new character, Addam of Hull. We first meet Alyn in episode one of the new series – where we learn that he saved Lord Coryls Velaryon's life during the Stepstones.
But is Alyn simply close to Lord Velaryon, or is there more to this story? Exactly who is Alyn in House of the Dragon and what role does he play this season? Here's everything worth knowing about the new character.
Warning! Major spoilers for House of the Dragon and George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood books ahead.
Who are Addam and Alyn of Hull?
Addam and Alyn of Hull are sailors who grew up in a town in Driftmark called Hull (not to be confused with the UK's 2017 city of culture Hull).
As above, we're introduced to Alyn in episode 1 when the Sea Snake meets him at the docks, saying: "They tell me that you're the one that dragged my body out of the sea,"
After the meeting, Corlys expresses that he's indebted to Alyn. In this episode we also find out that Alyn has a shipwright brother called Addam (Clinton Liberty).
What did we learn about Alyn in House of the Dragon episode 4?
Though introduced to us as the man who saves Corlys Velaryon's life at sea, he has a much stronger connection to Corlys than he is even aware of.
In House of the Dragon episode 4, a conversation between Rhaenys and Corlys reveals that Alyn is in fact Corlys' son from another woman, with Rhaenys implying that Corlys has been withholding a higher position in his naval force from Alyn because he's aware of this connection.
But why does this mean for the wider plot line of House of the Dragon season 2?
Well, both of Corlys' children are thought to be dead (though we know Leanor is alive somewhere). With Corlys a widower by the conclusion of the most recent episode, that leaves Alyn and Addam as his only living family, with Corlys having previously spoken of his intention to establish a new heir for Driftmark.
What happens to Alyn in Blood & Fire?
ICYMI, House of the Dragon is based on the book Fire & Blood by George R.R. Martin, so it provides a pretty good indication of what we can expect from the rest of the season, though it's worth noting that a few key plot points have historically deviated slightly.
In Blood & Fire, Addam and Alyn are revealed to be Corlys' bastard children.
After Rhaenyra's son Jacaerys decides they need more dragonriders for the unclaimed dragons to help them in the war against Aegon, several people from Driftmark step up. Addam successfully bonds with Seasmoke, though Alyn tries to ride wild dragon Sheepstealer with lacklustre results.
However, after Addam bonds with his dragon, Corlys petitions for the boys to be legitimised, with Addam becoming Corlys' heir to Driftmark.
While we don't know hose closely House of the Dragon will follow the storyline, we reckon we'll be seeing a lot more of Alyn and Addam in the coming episodes.
‘A Dance of Dragons’ left us with a lot of questions.
