Upcoming summer sizzler Hot Milk sees Sex Education and Barbie star Emma Mackey and all-time great Fiona Shaw star as mother and daughter in the movie adaptation of Deborah Levy's prize-winning novel of the same name. And it's coming to cinemas this summer, after being pushed from a May to a July release date.
Hot Milk takes the pair abroad as they seek medical care for mother Rose (Shaw)'s “mysterious illness” and explore the complex, codependent, ultimately defining dynamics that exist between mother and daughter, and what it means when a daughter strikes out on her own.
This one's been in the works for a while, and we predict it will be worth the wait, seeing these two perform together. Here's everything we know so far about Hot Milk.
Hot Milk plot
The film's plot synopsis foreshadows a seriously tense and dramatic mother-daughter relationship, forged between Emma and Fiona's characters.
“Set in the scorching heat of a Spanish summer, the film follows Rose (Fiona Shaw) and her daughter Sofia (Emma Mackey) as they travel to the seaside town of Almería to consult Gómez (Vincent Perez), an enigmatic healer who may hold the key to Rose’s mysterious illness,” it reads.
“But in the sun-drenched town, Sofia, trapped till now by her mother’s condition, begins to shed her inhibitions as she is drawn to the magnetic charms of a free-spirited traveller, Ingrid (Vicky Krieps). Sofia’s increased freedom becomes too much for her controlling mother, and as the hot sun beats down, their relationship simmers with pent-up resentment and bitterness, threatening to tear the fragile threads that hold them together.”
Hot Milk cast
Joining Emma Mackey (Sex Education, Emily), and Fiona Shaw (Bad Sisters, Killing Eve) will be Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Corsage), Vincent Perez (Alone in Berlin, Boléro) Yann Gael (Gladiator II, 1899) and Patsy Ferran (Mickey 17, Firebrand).
Hot Milk release date
It was due to land in cinemas on 30 May, but has now been pushed back until 4 July.
Hot Milk trailer
No full-length trailer for Hot Milk has dropped yet, but we do have a teaser clip here that shows the Mackey-Shaw mother-daughter dynamic. The pair are sat on a beach, with Fiona's Rose prodding Emma's Sofia about her love life, while watching a couple argue close by.
Fiona skilfully delivers her trademark humour when she describes a man as “unbearable, even at a distance”. We can't wait for more.
