What's occurring? The last ever episode of a British TV institution, that's what. Gavin & Stacey will return to our screens one last time for a crackin' Christmas special, a finale that we're sure will be one for the ages.
The last episode left us on quite a cliffhanger, when Nessa proposes to Smithy – and we've been promised that we'll find out what happened next, with them and all the other beloved characters.
The show's star and co-creator Ruth Jones has hinted that there might even be a character death revealed in the finale, which we're not sure we can handle. She also reflected in an interview about how it felt to film the final moments of Gavin & Stacey. “It was sad, of course,” she said. "This is the last time these characters will ever be on screen. And it was nostalgic because we'd be on set with the cast and we'd go down memory lane."
Stars such as Cynthia Erivo, Ariana Grande, Michelle Yeoh and Jonathan Bailey will return for part 2.

We're basically crying already at Ruth's take on how the characters will live on after the finale has aired.
"James and I have always felt – I know it sounds a bit strange – that they really do exist. So it's not like they're dying," she told Zoe Ball on Radio 2. "For us they're carrying on living their lives in Barry, or in Billericay. It's just that we're not party to what goes on in their life anymore." Sob.
Here's everything we know so far about Gavin & Stacey: The Finale.
Gavin & Stacey: The Finale plot
The BBC plot synopsis for the show's finale and Christmas special reads as follows:
"It’s five years since we left Nessa down on one knee declaring her love for Smithy and asking him to marry her. And a lot has happened in those five years. In Barry, Bryn’s packing the Picasso in readiness for a trip to Essex; Stacey and Gavin are looking for new ways to spice up their seventeen year marriage and Gwen is behaving most strangely. Nessa’s started a new business venture and Neil the Baby’s about to begin an apprenticeship with his dad.
“Over in Billericay Pam is stressing out at the prospect of playing hostess, not helped by a newly retired Mick practicing his golf swings in the living room and there have been more ups and downs in Pete and Dawn’s relationship. Join us on the journey to Barry and Billericay as we catch up with the Shipmans and the Wests for the very last time and maybe find out what exactly did happen on that fishing trip.”

Gavin & Stacey: The Finale cast
It looks like the gang will be back together for the finale, with IMDB confirming the following cast: Joanna Page as Stacey, Mathew Horne as Gavin, Ruth Jones as Nessa Jenkins, James Corden as Smithy, Melanie Walters as Gwen, Rob Brydon as Bryn, Alison Steadman as Pam, Larry Lamb as Mick, Julia Davis as Dawn, Steffan Rhodri as Dave, Adrian Scarborough as Pete, Sheridan Smith as Rudi and Robert Wilfort as Jason. Neil the Baby reportedly won't be played by previous actor Oscar Hartland – so we assume the role was recast.
Gavin & Stacey: The Finale release date
It will air on BBC One on Christmas Day on 9pm, dropping on BBC iPlayer at the same time.
