The tricky part about watching a show as good as Fallout? The wait for the next season. Never mind the new season of The Apprentice or Ryan Murphy’s The Beauty lurking on our watchlist — we need answers: when is Fallout season 3 coming?

Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered. Here’s everything we know so far about season 3 of Fallout, updated as news emerges from across the wasteland. Spoilers for season 2 ahead!

When will Fallout season 3 be released?

For now, we’re largely working with speculation, as Amazon Prime has yet to confirm a release date for Fallout season 3. It looks like it could be a while before we return to the wasteland.

The series was given an early renewal back in May 2025, but as of December that year, scripts were still being developed, according to Bethesda’s Todd Howard.

In an interview with IGN, executive producer Jonathan Nolan revealed that the team is hoping to begin filming in summer 2026, with ProductionList later reporting a targeted start date of 1 May.

“I’m excited that, though the scope of the show feels undiminished season on season… our incredibly talented cast and crew were able to work quickly enough to get back on the air in a reasonable amount of time,” Nolan said.

“I think what’s happened with television in terms of taking longer and longer between seasons is an unfortunate trend. You don’t want the show to lose any of its scope, so we like to be back on the air as soon as we can.”

We couldn’t agree more. But despite these good intentions, it looks like Fallout season 3 will likely take 18–24 months to reach us, suggesting a launch sometime between late 2027 and 2028.

Who will be in the cast of Fallout season 3?

Once again, concrete details are scarce. No official full cast list has been released for Fallout season 3, but Ella Purnell and Walton Goggins are expected to reprise their roles as Lucy MacLean and The Ghoul.

They’re likely to be joined by other key returning cast members, including Aaron Moten (Maximus), Kyle MacLachlan (Hank MacLean), Moisés Arias (Norm MacLean) and Frances Turner (Barb Howard).

As for Kumail Nanjiani, who played Paladin Xander Darkness, given his character’s early demise in season 2, he won’t be returning for the new season.

To jog your nuclear-impacted memory, here’s the full cast for Fallout:

  • Ella Purnell as Lucy MacLean
  • Aaron Moten as Maximus
  • Walton Goggins as Cooper Howard / The Ghoul
  • Frances Turner as Barb Howard
  • Kyle MacLachlan as Hank MacLean
  • Moisés Arias as Norm MacLean
  • Xelia Mendes-Jones as Dane
  • Sarita Choudhury as Kate Williams / Lee Moldaver
  • Leslie Uggams as Betty Pearson
  • Johnny Pemberton as Thaddeus
  • Michael Cristofer as Elder Cleric Quintus
  • Jon Daly as the Snake Oil Salesman
  • Justin Theroux as Robert Edwin House
  • Adam Faison as Ronnie McCurtry
  • Jon Gries as Biff

What happened at the end of season 2?

Okay, let’s break down the ending of Fallout Season 2.

Overseer Steph Harper, the newly appointed leader of Vault 32, is revealed to be Hank MacLean’s wife. The age gap and surprising new connections are explained by Hank being woken from stasis much earlier than Steph.

Meanwhile, Macaulay Culkin’s character takes control of the Legion after discovering there was no true successor to Caesar. He crowns himself leader and marches his troops toward New Vegas for a hostile takeover.

Hank initially plans to implant a device in Lucy’s neck to make her submissive. Fortunately, the Ghoul arrives just in time, shooting Hank in the buttocks and handing Lucy a gun so she can decide her father’s fate. Lucy attempts to implant Hank, hoping to extract the answers she needs and control him, but Hank secretly has a controller in his suit. Before she can get the full truth, he presses the button, wiping his memory while staying loyal to his masters.

The Ghoul finally reaches the managerial cryo-chambers in search of his wife and daughter, who survived the nuclear fallout. But when the doors open, the chambers are empty, except for a postcard reading “Greetings from Colorado,” with a handwritten note from his wife: “Colorado was a good idea.” Looks like the next stop is obvious.

After the credits, a post-credits scene introduces the Brotherhood of Steel, absent for much of the latter half of Season 2. Dane delivers the remnants to Quintus, who reveals he no longer intends to unite the Brotherhood, he plans to destroy it. He unveils a blueprint for Liberty Prime Alpha, a massive, powerful mech suit far beyond standard Power Armour. Clearly, Quintus will be a major threat in the future.

There you have it, the season 2 Fallout ending explained.
