Nineties nostalgia lovers, this one is for you. The Clueless reboot is happening, and Cher actor Alicia Silverstone has opened up about how she feels about its return. She will executive produce and reprise her iconic role.
“I’m really excited about it,” Silverstone said in an interview with Today. “I think we’re going to try really hard. The goal is to make it honour what everyone loves about Clueless and Cher.”
“So we want to honour that, but also bring something fresh and new to it,” she added. “I’m confident that we’ll be able to do that, but we’re in baby stages right now.”
Poetic License sees members of industry families such as Nico Parker, Cooper Hoffman, Maisy Stella and Jake Bongiovi join the cast.
Gossip Girl and The OC bosses Josh Schwartz and Stephanie Savage will executive produce alongside Silverstone, so you know the team will have the teen drama art perfected. The original Clueless director Amy Heckerling will also return, with Silverstone explaining that “Amy understands Cher’s heart—that blend of superficiality and sincerity that made her revolutionary.”
This isn't the first time we've seen Clueless make a comeback. A sitcom aired shortly after the film released, starring Dionne actor Stacey Dash and Rachel Blanchard as Cher and Amber actor Elisa Donovan. A London West End musical of Clueless has also captured our hearts, and we were also looking forward to a Dionne-centred spin-off, which was announced back in 2020, but never made it to screens.
A plot synopsis for the spin-off describes “a baby pink and bisexual blue-tinted, tiny sunglasses-wearing, oat milk latte and Adderall-fueled look at what happens when queen bee Cher disappears and her lifelong No. 2 Dionne steps into Cher’s vacant Air Jordans. How does Dionne deal with the pressures of being the new most popular girl in school, while also unraveling the mystery of what happened to her best friend?”
Silverstone initially announced the exciting news of the reboot back in April, with an Instagram post and the caption “Totally buggin'… in the best way”.

Clueless reboot plot
We don't know specifics yet on the plot, it's being kept tightly under wraps. We're expecting some legacy cameos from the original film, while Silverstone has hinted at some “surprises”, while stressing that we will be returning to Cher's story in a meaningful way and not relying on nostalgia alone.
The Clueless reboot will see Cher Horowitz in a modern setting and tackling 2025-appropriate storylines, while honouring the essence of the original film.

Silverstone has been confirmed to be returning as Cher, while Dionne actor Stacey Dash has publically expressed interest but isn't officially attached. No announcements regarding Clueless stars Paul Rudd, Donald Faison or Breckin Meyer have been made yet either.
Sadly, Brittany Murphy will not reprise her role as Tai, as the actor passed away in 2009.
Clueless reboot release date
Production for the Clueless reboot is slated to begin in early 2026, so we're likely looking at a late 2026 or 2027 release date.
