Hollywood darling Cameron Diaz has come out of retirement to bring us new Netflix thriller Back In Action, where she and Jamie Foxx play a married couple whose secret identities are compromised.
This comes after she chose to step back from public life and working in the entertainment industry back in 2018, with her last major role being in 2014's Annie, which she starred in alongside Foxx.
It's based on the true story of wellness influencer falsely claiming she cured her own brain cancer, starring Kaitlyn Dever.
“It felt like something I had to do to reclaim my own life. And I just really didn’t care about anything else. I didn’t. Nobody’s opinion, nobody’s success, no one’s offer, no one’s anything could change my mind about my decision of taking care of myself and building the life that I really wanted to have,” she explained at Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit in October last year. “I think it really comes to: What are you passionate about? For me, it was to build my family.”
Cameron seems to be back in action herself in the entertainment world, as she is due to star in Jonah Hill's upcoming black comedy movie Outcome alongside Kaia Gerber, Laverne Cox and Keanu Reeves, too. She's also set to reprise her role as Princess Fiona in Shrek 5, which is due out in 2026.
She said on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon of her return to acting: “It’s a little bit of muscle memory, you know what I mean? I did that for so long, it’s kind of like the process — I just fell back into it. But it feels a little bit different.”

Back in Action plot
The film's plot synopsis reads: “Years after giving up life as CIA spies to start a family, Emily (Diaz) and Matt (Foxx) find themselves dragged back into the world of espionage when their cover is blown.”
They went off the grid to ensure their children and new life were safe, but it looks like danger may have followed them. Emily and Matt must then contend with all of their enemies that they are, in fact alive, putting themselves and their family in huge danger.

Joining Cameron Diaz and Jamie will be Glenn Close, who will play Emily's mother – as well as appearances from Andrew Scott, Kyle Chandler, Jamie Demetriou (Barbie, Fleabag), McKenna Roberts (Skyscraper) and Rylan Jackson.
Back in Action release date
It will drop on Netflix on Friday 17 January.
