I'll level with you, I hate flying. So when my bestie suggested a staycation in Bournemouth for our annual holiday, I was delighted.

Just a three-hour car journey (or a two-hour train ride) from London, the seaside town is renowned for its seven miles of sandy beaches, microclimate of sunny weather, and energetic nightlife. And we couldn't have chosen a better hotel than The NICI, the luxury resort perched on Bournemouth’s West Cliff, for getting the most out of our girls' holiday.

Thinking of heading to the coast for your summer getaway? Read on for my honest review of The NICI in Bournemouth.

The NICI Hotel Review:

When we arrived at The NICI on a sunny afternoon earlier in the year, there was precisely one spot left in the car park – and it was a tight squeeze. Luckily, the easy-breezy valet offered to park my car for me, setting the tone for a carefree, indulgence-filled weekend.

The NICI has benefited from massive investment and reinvention over the past few years. In 2023, the hotel unveiled the results of its multi-million-pound refurbishment, featuring a 30m outdoor heated pool, an outdoor activity centre, and a brand-new luxury spa to boot. The result is an impeccably styled resort with a Miami beach club vibe, from the poolside drinks to the palm tree prints.

With 80+ rooms to choose from, we set up in a ‘Sea View Suite’ complete with a super king-size bed, an enormous power shower and bathtub, and a gorgeous balcony area. Unlike many rooms I've stayed in, the ‘sea view’ really lives up to its name.

On our first morning waking up in the hotel, we looked out to the sea and decided we needed to jump right in. After breakfast, we changed into our swimming costumes, packed up our towels and headed to the beach.

The nearest beach is a 10-minute, downhill walk from the hotel. Even though we were blessed with sunshine and warm weather, the English Channel is not for the weak. And when it comes to cold water, I am weak. While my friend managed to get fully submerged in the water, I waded in till the sea level reached my hips before giving up in a (minor) strop. We then spent an hour or so wandering along the beachfront, including taking a detour along the iconic Bournemouth pier, where many an ice cream and iced latte were enjoyed.

After walking back to the hotel, which was pretty punishing on sea-tired legs, we showered and made our way to the spa, which is fully kitted out with an 18m heated indoor pool, a hydrotherapy pool, a steam room, and an aromatherapy sauna. From there, we headed outside for a poolside Croque Monsieur and a cocktail – possibly the best combination ever.

A word on the dining options available at The NICI; cliche as it sounds, we really were spoiled for choice. On the first evening, we made a reservation at South Beach Restaurant & Bar, one of the most highly-regarded restaurants in Bournemouth, boasting a cosmopolitan atmosphere and an extensive selection of free-flowing drinks. Menu highlights include the South Coast Scallops, the Lobster & Crayfish Pappardelle, and the Churrasco Hanger Steak.

On our last night, we headed to Old Harry Rocks, which overlooks Bournemouth's sandy beaches with a view of the Purbecks. We loved the more relaxed vibe, with a laid-back atmosphere and a menu packed with locally-sourced, fresh foods. I went for the tuna carpaccio, with avocado, crème fraîche, and coriander to start, followed by the old Harry’s cheeseburger and fries. Oh, and plenty of Whispering Angel.

The NICI has it all: prime seaside location, stunning views, original and creative dining, and best of all? A Miami beach club vibe that elevates any girls' getaway.
