Over the past few years, the baggy denim trend has felt inescapable. It feels like jeans have been getting baggier and baggier, wider and wider, until they started becoming the subject of memes. But this season, slouchy jeans have had a stylish upgrade.
Sure, last year, the internet would have had you believe that skinny jeans were back. And yes, they have become trendy again for a small section of the population – namely chronically online young people who romanticise the late 00s and early 2010s, a period now dubbed ‘indie sleaze’ for its hedonism and love of indie rock. But most people can't get away with that look without appearing like they've stepped straight out of 2016 (and not in a good way.)

Luckily, baggy jeans are still going strong, if the street style set at the recent Fashion Weeks in Copenhagen, Berlin and Seoul have taught us anything. But they're not the barrel leg or ultra-flared styles that dominated last year. This denim trend is slouchier, with jeans often pooling around the ankles – sometimes termed ‘puddle jeans’ – with a relaxed, boho silhouette. Or sometimes, the hem is the perfect length, just grazing the ground or going slightly past the ankle. There's no hard and fast rule, so go for what feels right. True style is really about feeling comfortable in your clothes. You can wear the trendiest outfit you like but if you don't feel good, it will show.
You can also opt for any colour of jeans, but there's something about a classic blue denim pair. Perhaps because our jeans have undergone so many funky iterations over the years, that now a normcore jean feels weirdly… fashion-forward. If classic blue isn't your thing though, we've picked out plenty of other hues below.
The trick is to pair them with a fab shoe. The style set loves to combine baggy, long jeans with a pointy-toed shoe, as it peeks out from under the puddle of denim and feels meticulously styled. But you can also wear them with something as casual as trainers, continuing the normcore vibe.
Whatever your preferences, take a look at the trending styles of baggy jeans and puddle jeans below…
