Those who weren't busy with Valentine's Day based activities last night will know that the BAFTAs took place yesterday evening, when film's biggest talents are forced to endure freezing February temperatures and hit the red carpet in their finery.

We have gleaned two red fashion trends from last night's red carpet. First, the glitterati are into red once again. This could have been a cheering nod to Valentine's Day, or maybe a way of blending neatly into the carpet, but either way it was easily the evening's colour of choice.

Dakota Johnson's take on the shade was decidedly romantic, with a plunging neckline and plenty of ruffles - a key trend for spring/summer 2016. We love Dree Hemingway's prairie chic Erdem look, again very romantic but in a prim way. Emilia Clarke went for a sculpted form-fitting red dress, which we can imagine Kate Winslet in come to think of it. Hannah Bagshawe went for the same colour, wearing an classic full-skirted style.

Column dresses were also big - a favourite of two of this award season's most stylish actresses, Alicia Vikander and Saoirse Ronan. Vikander, as a Vuitton ambassador, opted for a badass leather style, decorated with spikes - which looked punk in the most elegant of ways (who knew that was possible). The dress apparently weighed two and a half stone, so hats off to Vikander for making what was essentially a night-long workout look easy. Ronan's Burberry look had the same streamlined shape, but with a more colourful vibe.

Although Julianne Moore's monochrome Armani dress had a fishtale, it too had a similarly pared-down shape. Basically, the stars are saying that go for it with embellishment but only if the shape is suitably streamlined.

Tonight sees the GRAMMYs take place, at which will undoubtedly Rihanna wear a brilliantly mad outfit. Then all that's left is the Oscars, which happens in just under two weeks.
