It's official, #auratok is booming thanks to a whole legion of emerging mystics tuning into their energy. So, it follows that aura skincare would capture our attention.
Unfamiliar? Our auras are said to be the energy fields that emanate from us based on our bodies own natural vibrations. Before you dismiss it as completely woo-woo, there is scientific evidence that suggests our energetic vibrations are important to our wellbeing – be that our heartbeat, breath rate or the dinky vibrations happening at cellular level – though modern-day science has yet to sync this up with our emotional state. Auras follow the theory that as with colours, which vibrate at different wavelengths, our mood, personality and overall outlook can be informed by our bodies vibrations and this presents itself in the energy we emit to others. “No two auras can be the same because we are all unique, however there will be an underlying vibration to our auras and an associated colour (or few)," explains Katy Meade-King, a professional medium, healer and spiritual teacher at Soul Spirit.
Wondering what yours is? “Anyone can see an aura, it’s important that you trust your intuition when giving it a go. Start by standing in front of a mirror with a white wall behind you, set your gaze on your forehead, find a focal point and let your eyes adjust, then without moving them, scan the outer perimeter of your head and shoulders. You might just see a faint vapour or you may see colour, because colour is the frequency of visible light, and light waves are travelling energy like the constantly changing aura. Each colour signifies a certain vibration which has different meanings and associations both physically and emotionally and can tell a lot about the individual’s personality, health and wellbeing,” says Katy. If you're still struggling, take an online aura test.
But, since our auras are so linked to our wellbeing, we asked Katy how they can feed into our self care and skincare routines. She's suggested some dreamy aura skincare pairings below…
RED
GROUNDED, STRONG, PASSIONATE
THE FACE MASK: FUNCTIONAL BUT FRIVOLOUS
“A person with a red aura is passionate and fiery, they can be quite hot headed and quick to take decisions,” says Katy. “They can crave safety and steadiness so they would suit a beauty routine that allows them to find comfort in the process, rather than maybe their usual ’slap-dash’ approach,” she adds. A face mask is functional, which is crucial for hard-working red auras but it's also a little bit frivolous and calls for a moment of calm. We love the celeb-favourite 111Skin sheet masks which take 15 minutes to give skin a red-carpet worthy skin boost
Try: 111Skin Y Theorem Bio Cellulose Facial Mask, Caudalie Instant Detox Mas and Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask
PINK
GENTLE, EMOTIONAL, THOUGHTFUL
THE RICH CLEANSER: DESERVEDLY SELF-INDULGENT
“Those with a pink aura generally are the lovers – they give their care and love freely and probably don’t make sure that they get the same levels in return so balance is key for them,” explains Katy. “It's important for them to make sure they are giving and loving to themselves with their skincare choices,” she adds. “They deserve a bit of pampering, self love and indulgence.” Skincare-wise, we'd suggest a rich, opulent cleansing balm or gel to wash away the days makeup, along with everyone else's dramas.
Try: Elemis Pro Collagen Rose Cleansing Balm, Oskia Renaissance Cleansing Gel and Aurelia London Miracle Cleanser
ORANGE
ADVENTUROUS, THRILL-SEEKING, CONFIDENT
THE FACE MIST: SENSORIAL & SCENTED
“An orange aura is one of creativity and this person might be artistic and much more connected to their divine feminine,” says Katy. “They might be inclined to a much more sensual beauty regime, inspired by textures, fragrances and colours,” she adds. If you ask us, nothing is more delicious, sensorially that a cooling spritz with a face mist, especially if it feels silky and smells delicious.
Try: Origins Ginzing Treatment Lotion Mist and Beauty Pie Japan Fusion Energy Essence Mist
YELLOW
CREATIVE, FRIENDLY, RELAXED
THE MOISTURISER: FUN & FRESH
“A yellow aura generally denotes someone who is exuberant, high energy, joyful and optimistic,” explains Katy, “so their skincare might be more about bringing them towards an equilibrium of peace and calm, whilst still being playful.” If that sounds like you, find a refreshing moisturiser from fun brands like Milk Makeup, Glow Recipe and Drunk Elephant to replenish and balance skin.
Try: Milk Makeup Vegan Milk Moisturiser, Glow Recipe Plum Plump Hyaluronic Cream and Drunk Elephant Protini Polypeptide Cream
GREEN
COMPASSIONATE, RESPONSIBLE, HEALING
THE FACE EXFOLIATOR: NATURAL & ORGANIC
“A person with a green aura is also heart focussed, striving for balance,” Katy says. “They love nature and find trees and plants healing, so they might go towards the purest organic products and stick to natural beauty looks,” she adds. Strip things back (gently) with an exfoliator from virtuous brands like Tropic, Pai and Kora Organics.
Try: Tropic Juicy Greens Exfoliating Toning Essence, Pai Virtuous Circle Kukui and Jojoba Bead Eco-Bead Exfoliator and Kora Organics Turmeric 2-in-2 Brightening & Exfoliating Mask
BLUE
TRANQUIL, WISE, INTUITIVE
THE FACE OIL: WITH ESSENTIAL OILS
“Blue auras are connected to the throat chakra and are all about expression and communication,” Katy explains. “They are often far more emotionally sensitive and can find it challenging to express themselves, so prefer to shy away. They might be drawn to essential oil based products because of the emotive and layered connection to the senses,” she says. The obvious answer? A decadent face oil that smells truly dreamy.
Try: Herbivore Lapis Blue Tansy & Squalane Balacing Facial Oil, Decleor Rose Damascena Aromessence Oil Serum and Garnier Organic Lavandin Glow Oil
INDIGO & VIOLET
FAR-SIGHTED, PERCEPTIVE, CURIOUS
THE FACE SERUM: FOR A RITUALISTIC MORNING ROUTINE
“A deep purple or indigo aura is generally someone who is very imaginative and often up in their thoughts,” Katy explains. “They can be worriers, so a regular routine with a few different steps might be wonderful to help refocus and come back to the present moment,” she says. Add a serum step to your routine, whether that's a hydrating hyaluronic acid am and pm or a smoothing retinol for the evening.
Try: Byoma Brightening Serum, The Inkey List Hyaluronic Serum and Cerave Resurfacing Retinol Serum
WHITE
BALANCED, OPEN-MINDED, EMPATHETIC
THE FACE ESSENCE: EXPERIMENTAL BUT NURTURING
“A white aura (the rarest) is generally well balanced, open minded, calm and empathetic,” Katy says. “With that in mind, their beauty choices might be more experimental as they are open to trying new and exciting products,” she adds. “But they can take on a lot of other people’s emotions so it's important that a good cleansing routine is in place.” To bridge your cleansing routine with the rest of your skincare and supercharge your serums, a face essence is a good idea. The lightweight layer of hydration ensures skin is more absorbent and receptive to the skincare you layer on next. Plus, they can contain concentrated ingredients that boost and benefit skin.
Try: Fresh Kombucha Facial Treatment Essence and Tatcha The Essence
