A Complete Unknown plot

IMDB's synopsis for the movie reads: “At the Newport Folk Festival in 1965, a young Bob Dylan shakes up his act on the folk music scene by going electric and siring rock as the voice of a generation - defining one of the most transformative moments in 20th century music.”

We also know it will explore a significant romance in Bob Dylan's life, with Elle Fanning playing a character inspired by Suze Rotolo, the singer's first love.

Speaking about the film on the Happy Sad Confused podcast last year, director James Mangold said, “The best true-life movies are never cradle to grave but they’re about a very specific moment.”

He continued, “It’s a kind of ensemble piece about this moment in time, the early ’60s in New York, and this 17-year-old kid with $16 in his pockets hitchhikes his way to New York to meet Woody Guthrie who is in the hospital and is dying of a nerve disease.

"He sings Woody a song that he wrote for him and befriends Pete Seeger, who is like a son to Woody, and Pete sets him up with gigs at local clubs and there you meet Joan Baez and all these other people who are part of this world.”

A Complete Unknown cast

Alongside Timothée and Elle will be Monica Barbaro as Joan Baez and Boyd Holbrook as Johnny Cash Edward Norton is also reportedly playing the role of Pete Seeger after Benedict Cumberbatch dropped out. Scott McNairy, Dan Fogler and Charlie Tahan will also star.

What have the cast said about A Complete Unknown?

In a recent interview with GLAMOUR, Elle Fanning spoke about her experiences on set and playing Bob Dylan's muse.

Of Suze Rotolo, the real-life girlfriend of Bob Dylan's that her character is based on, she said: “She was an incredible woman, reading her memoir was really interesting, and just aspects of their relationship. I mean, she really was his first love.”

Elle added: “It was great to form that relationship, with Timmy [Chalamet], he’s worked so hard for this part. He's singing everything live, like he's really like going for it. It was very special to watch him do that. And he's been a friend for a long time. So yeah, I'm just happy to be a part of it.”

What have fans said about A Complete Unknown?

The first pics of Timothée on set of A Complete Unknown set social media alight earlier this week, showing the actor in his full Dylan get-up; complete with a thrift-store-looking cap, knitted scarf, and, of course, a guitar.
