Paris Fashion Week just kicked off couture season with some major street style looks… and some *very* contentious ones
Paris Fashion Week is known for attracting some of the world's very best street style moments twice annually, at the end of February and September during the spring/summer and autumn/winter showcases.
But while those are the dates marked in most fashion fans' diaries as the ones to keep an eye on for a plethora of style inspiration, the French capital in fact boasts another biannual showcase which welcomes an altogether more #extra display of fashion.
Couture week, which plays host to the most ‘high end’ designer fashion catwalks on the planet, kicked off in Paris this morning. And with Schiaparelli first on the schedule, some seriously major street style moments quickly assembled…
Known, and adored, for its avant-garde designs ever since Italian fashion designer Elsa Schiaparelli founded the label in 1927, you've likely swooned over many of the brand's more recent creations worn by everyone from Lady Gaga - perhaps most memorably at the inauguration of Joe Biden - to Bella Hadid, Beyoncé, Zendaya, Adele, Cardi B, Hailey Bieber and Cynthia Erivo.

Arriving at the brand's couture SS23 showcase in Paris this morning, Doja Cat was every inch a couture street style icon as she turned every head on her way inside the venue.
Covered in a mesmerising 30,000 hand-applied Swarovski crystals, Doja had spent almost five hours getting ready with makeup artist and beauty icon Pat McGrath. “The final product was a magical, mesmerising masterpiece”, commented Pat, “and a tribute to Doja Cat’s hard work and dedication.”

But she wasn't the only attendee turning heads, with Kylie Jenner arriving a few moments later in a beautiful LBD… with a twist. The twist being a replica lion head attached to the dress's bodice.
“BEAUTY AND THE BEAST” she captioned an image of herself on Instagram. “Thank you Daniel Roseberry and Schiaparelli for such a special morning. Wow I loved wearing this faux art creation constructed by hand using manmade materials. Beautiful beautiful”.

But, as is the way with many of the world's most statement fashion moments, the look has caused a lot of contention.
“This is highly inappropriate, prop or not this should never have been designed”, commented one of her followers, while another suggested that the look was “practically glamourising animal cruelty.”
Explaining the immensely intricate process behind the design - which replicated three other looks unveiled on the runway modelled by Naomi Campbell, Irina Shayk and Shalom Harlow - Schiaparelli Creative Director Daniel Roseberry, who has been at the helm since 2019, took to Instagram to reveal the meaning behind the concept.
“3 animals sculpted and embroidered by hand, celebrating the glory of nature and guarding the woman who wears it. The leopard, the lion, and the she wolf. All from Dante’s Inferno.”
