Simon EmmettOn her Twitter page, Barbara Palvin says she’s ‘just working hard, living my dream’; to our eyes there’s not much ‘just’ about it. The 19-year-old Hungarian is one of the most in-demand models of the moment; splashed across billboards around the world as a spokesmodel for L’Oreal Paris; rocking the Victoria’s Secret runway. And it doesn’t end there, as Barbara has her sights set on a career in acting and singing too. Prepare to see a lot of this girl.

Big hair; smouldering eyes; velvety skin: it’s the definitive recipe for bombshell beauty. “Bouncy hair is always sexy,” says L’Oreal Paris international hairstylist Stephane Lancien. To build volume for all hair types, he uses classic Elnett Satin Hairspray £3.79 L’Oreal Paris. “Spray it into the lengths before using tongs. Let curls set while you do your make-up and then brush them out with a boar bristle brush (try a Pure Bristle £75 Mason Pearson, available at escentual.com) until you get big, lush waves.” To compliment rather than compete with the hair, make-up artist Val Garland created a rich chocolate eye. “I did a matte lid and pushed metallic into the socket line - it gives more depth,” she explains. “This is at once feminine and masculine and I like the fact that at first you don’t quite know whether she has long or short hair,” says Stephane. The secret is to allow it to look spontaneous and not try to be too neat. Super-clean hair can be a bit slippery, so Stephanie suggests spraying in some Studio Line Matt & Messy Salt Spray £3.56 L’Oreal Paris to give hair some grip and make it easier to build the shape; or you can try a blast of dry shampoo - we love Gentle Dry Shampoo with Oatmilk £7.50 Klorane. Then twist the hair from the nape of the neck upwards, roll over one side of the face and pin in place. Balance the boyishness of the style with a smoky eye - but not in the traditional sense. “I like a modern smoky eye on the upper lid, which leans more towards a cat eye,” says Val. The key is blending and elongating the shadow on top, working the bottom inner ring with pencil, but leaving the lower lid un-smoked - instead, use mascara on the bottom lashes to create the shadow. “The look here is all about natural movement,” say Stephane. To achieve this relaxed undone texture, he separated the hair into five sections, twisted them into themselves, pinned and misted over with hairspray. He then blasted the hair with a hairdryer and unpinned the min buns. Stephane likes to rub a drop of Elvive Extraordinary Oil 39.99 L’Oreal Paris into the ends so they stick together slightly for that mussed-up vibe. Here we prettied up the ‘do with a brightly coloured veil wrapped haphazardly around the crown. Val matched it with vivid emerald eyes and a powder pink lip: “Keep skin pared back to make this colour match work.” For real-looking but perfect skin, we love the dewy finish of Tinted Moisturizer Crème Compact £33 Laura Mericer.

On the flip side of bouncy, super smooth hair can be just as alluring. “Straight hair looks sexy when it’s not poker-flat,” says Stephane. His tip? “Instead of relying on straighteners, smooth hair with a blow-out so you can keep the ends rounded.” And, surprisingly his secret tip is not a styling but a care product: “To get this super glossy finish, don’t over use products. Wash in shine with Elvive Smooth&Polish Shampoo £2.89 L’Oreal Paris and rinse with cool water.” Here we clipped in a fake fringe. If you fancy a real one, make it blunt and brow-skimming for a cool ‘60’s vibe. And check out those nails!
