Wedding Movies

Confetti, wedding cakes and crazy bridesmaids, these films have them all!

I Give It A Year (2013)
Rose Byrne and Rafe Spall star as newlyweds negotiating their way through the first year of marriage. This proves to be a difficult task, especially when there's a socially-incompetent best man and "perfect" ex-girlfriend in the mix.
Rex FeaturesFour Weddings and a Funeral (1994)
This Richard Curtis flick kick-started the modern trend for wedding-related romantic comedies. From a late Best Man to a nervous priest (remember the “holy goat”), this movie laughed at ridiculous wedding rituals, without skimping on pathos and moving moments.
Rex FeaturesBride Wars (2007)
Two best friends, both scheduled to get married, in the same place, on the same day, made for the perfect ingredients for a hilarious look at the competitive bride (and we all know them). Anne Hathaway and Kate Hudson received rave reviews and the film grossed $113m worldwide.
Rex FeaturesMamma Mia! (2008)
Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried led an all-star cast as they sung, skipped and sashayed their way through Abba’s hits. Based on a remote Greek island, this is the story of a bride-to-be trying to discover the identity of her father.
Rex FeaturesMy Big Fat Greek Wedding (2002)
Another Greek wedding film, minus the singing and the Mediterranean location (it’s set in Chicago). Toula Portokalos meets English teacher Ian after enrolling in computer classes and all they have to do to achieve their happily ever after is convince her enormous family that they’re perfect for each other. Not as easy as you’d think!
Rex Features27 Dresses (2008)
Always the bridesmaid, never the bride? That’s the case for Katherine Heigl’s character, who is forced to be a bridesmaid yet again (27 times and counting) when it looks like her sister is going to marry her boss and the man she is secretly in love with.
Rex FeaturesBridesmaids (2011)
Bridesmaids threw out the rulebook when it came to wedding films. Food poisoning in a bridal shop and the reality of being a broke bridesmaid – this was the grittier side of weddings, and it was hilarious.
Rex FeaturesBride & Prejudice (2004)
Give a Jane Austen classic the big budget Bollywood production and you’re bound to get something a little special. Aishwarya Rai and Martin Henderson star as Lalita Bakshi and Mr Darcy and negotiate different cultures, families and the aforementioned prejudice on their journey to marriage.
Rex FeaturesThe Proposal (2009)
Sandra Bullock is spot-on as a career-focussed publisher who, facing deportation to Canada, persuades her ambitious assistant to marry her. It shouldn’t work but a good script meant that this film picked up a host of awards and $168m at the box office.
Rex FeaturesMy Best Friend’s Wedding (1997)
What do you do when you realise that you’re in love with your best friend, and he’s getting married? How about disrupting the wedding. That’s just what Julia Roberts tries to do, with the help of gay pal Rupert Everett and a few Burt Bacharach songs.
Rex FeaturesThe Wedding Crashers (2005)
This is what happens when the Frat Pack decide they want to get into the wedding movie genre. Owen Wilson, Vince Vaughn and Will Ferrell star as the aforementioned wedding crashers, who find that bluffing doesn’t get them out of every social situation.
Rex FeaturesThe Wedding Planner (2001)
Mary Fiore (Jennifer Lopez) commits the cardinal sin in the wedding planning business when she falls for the groom of the nuptials she’s organising. Hey, we can’t blame her though – he was played by a dashing Matthew McConaughey.
Rex FeaturesThe Graduate (1967)
The wedding scene for The Graduate is so iconic that it’s become part of our popular culture (it’s been spoofed by Wayne’s World and in Step’s Tragedy video) but the actual film centres more on the affair that Dustin Hoffman’s character has with the notorious Mrs Robinson.
Rex FeaturesMuriel’s Wedding (1994)
Muriel spends her life dreaming about her perfect wedding day – problem is she hasn’t found the perfect groom yet. Then she steals some money, changes her name to Mariel and, guess what?, things start to happen. Yet again, there are Abba songs in abundance.
Rex FeaturesCorpse Bride (2005)
Tim Burton’s take on weddings was never going to be a confetti and meringue affair. The director cast wife Helena Bonham Carter and pal Johnny Depp in his dark animation, about a shy groom who accidently marries a dead woman when he practises his wedding vows near her grave.
Rex FeaturesRunaway Bride (1999)
Julia Roberts has no qualms about setting herself up in this romantic comedy about a woman who leaves a string of fiancés at the altar. The actress herself famously broke off her engagement to Kiefer Sutherland just days before they were set to head up the aisle.
Rex FeaturesThe Wedding Singer (1998)
A great film for a bit of 1980s nostalgia! Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler star as a waitress and wedding singer who end engaged to the wrong people (i.e. not each other). Thank god Billy Idol is there is help play match-maker.
Rex FeaturesRachel Getting Married (2008)
About as different as you can get from Bride Wars, Anne Hathaway stars as drug addict Kym, who’s released from rehab for a few days so she can attend her sister’s wedding. Gritty and emotional, Anne Hathaway only just missed out on an Oscar for her portrayal.
Rex FeaturesAmerican Pie: The Wedding (2003)
The American Pie franchise were always going to jump on the wedding movie bandwagon and they did it with Jim and Michelle’s nuptials. Crude plotlines aplenty ensued, as did a cameo from January Jones as Alyson Hannigan’s little sister.
Rex FeaturesMade Of Honour (2008)
Tom and Hannah’s ten-year platonic relationship changes irreparably when she gets engaged. Tom decides he wants to woo her himself and what better way to do that then be Hannah’s “Maid” of (Dis)Honour?
Rex FeaturesThe Philadelphia Story (1940)
Packed with acting heavy-weights, Katherine Hepburn, Cary Grant and John Stewart are trapped in a wedding-day love triangle in this classic flick.
Rex FeaturesThe Hangover (2009)
Not strictly a wedding film but what-happens-before-the-wedding film, the Hangover centres on a stag do that gets out of control in Las Vegas of all places.
Rex FeaturesSeven Brides for Seven Brothers (1954)
This is what wedding films used to be like. It’s Oregon, in the 1850s, and a man brings his wife home to the farm to meet his six brothers. They’re so impressed with her, they decide they want to get married too (as you do).
Rex FeaturesFather of the Bride (1991)
Overprotective dads the world-over sympathised with Steve Martin as he is forced to navigate his way through foreign wedding planners, excitable swans and lavish flower arrangements, before reconciling himself with the idea that he’s going to give away his daughter.

The Knot (2012)
A series of mishaps on your wedding day? There’s a film in that and this Mena Suvari and Talulah Riley flick is it!
Rex FeaturesA Few Best Men (2011)
Dubbed Bridesmaids for the boys, this Aussie comedy sees a groom and his three Best Men travel Down Under for a wedding in the outback. This isn’t really about the bride and groom though: Rebel Wilson and mother-of-the-bride Olivia Newton-John steal the show!
Rex FeaturesThe Princess Bride (1987)
Everything a fairytale should be! Swords, giants, an evil prince and a beautiful princess. Buttercup is kidnapped on the eve of her wedding to Prince Humperdinck, and so starts an awfully exciting adventure.
Rex FeaturesThe Bachelor (1999)
A bachelor is set to lose his $100m inheritance unless he can marry someone by 6.05pm on his 30th birthday. Shame then, that he’s just split up with the girl he wants to marry. Renée Zellweger and Chris O’Donnell play the star-crossed lovers.
Rex FeaturesThe Marrying Man (1991)
Alec Baldwin stars as playboy Charley Pearl, who is forced to marry a nightclub singer (Kim Basinger) after gangster Bugsy Siegel finds them in bed together. The on-off romancein the movie was mirrored only by Basinger and Baldwin’s relationship, which, started on the set of the film, but ended in an acrimonious divorce.
Rex FeaturesThe Wedding Date (2005)
In a similar vein to My Best Friend’s Wedding, Kat Ellis hires a male escort to pose as her boyfriend at her sister’s wedding, so she can impress her ex-fiancé. Can you guess what happens next? Look out for Amy Adams playing a bad sister.
Rex FeaturesMonster-In-Law (2005)
Jennifer Lopez is a bit of a fan of the wedding films, isn’t she? In Monster-In-Law she stars as a bride trying to stop her mother-in-law sabotaging her relationship – and wedding day.
Rex FeaturesLicense To Wed (2007)
Robin Williams plays a tough-talking vicar who puts a couple through a gruelling series of tests before letting them marry in his church. Not a critical success but an easy watch.
Rex FeaturesMonsoon Wedding (2001)
Eastern and Western cultures come together when Lalit Verma organises a big, chaotic wedding for his daughter. Drama, danger and lots of rain, Monsoon Wedding is a visual feast, as well as a great plot.
Rex FeaturesOur Family Wedding (2010)
Romeo & Juliet without the tragedy, this film sees Ugly Betty star America Ferrera and Forest Whitaker tie the knot, despite the backdrop of their fathers’ feud.
Rex FeaturesThe Five-Year Engagement (2012)
It takes Tom one year to propose to Violet, but five years to actually marry her. Jason Segel and Emily Blunt star as the couple who struggle to make it up the aisle.
