What to wear to work in the summer (without being sent to HR)

Whilst the balmier summer months are filled with promise (strolling into the office beneath blue skies, mid-week lunches in the park, after-work drinks in the early evening glow), what to wear to work presents a bit of a conundrum. With city temperatures often soaring to 30 degrees plus, how do you keep cool whilst retaining a stylish and professional demeanor?

Based on a quick survey of Glamour's most senior and very stylish team members, let's start with the nos:

1. Shorts - you don't want to get called into a last minute meeting with your boss in denim cut-offs. Save them for Glasto…

2. Too much skin - this includes short skirts, backless tops and off the shoulder numbers.

3. Pale colours that show sweat - who wants to spend the working day worrying about unsightly sweat patches when you're typing away at your desk?

4. Anything resembling a flip-flop or even a sandal unless you work in a particularly informal environment.

So what are the building blocks of a successful workwear wardrobe? Short sleeved, knee length dresses provide an easy, fuss-free solution to summer dressing (I own several and rely on these when I'm short on time in the morning). Cos has plenty of options that feel chic and expensive in understated black and navy.

If you fancy tapping into a big SS16 trend look for a shirt with a bit of detail like a peplum hem, pussy bow neck or sleeves that tie. Team with a knee length or midi skirts. I recently bought a silky, lightweight suit from Zara which has an air of togetherness about it and is perfect when you're going from desk to dinner.

Thanks to the need for less clothing, summer dressing is by nature an all-round simpler affair than dressing for the other seasons - accessories provide the finishing touches. Shoes can make or break a boardroom-worthy look. I favour a block heel sandal (pedicured feet are a must) or a pair of Chanel-esque sling-back's - Topshop have a great pair. Statement earrings or a sculptural cuff will add interest to a simple silk shirt or shift dress. A lady-like top-handle bag lends a certain air of togetherness and is also more practical for work as it fits more than a shoulder bag.
