We beauty junkies love a new season - it spells tempting new trends, an über-desirable new colour palette and with it, the chance to reinvent our look! If your make-up bag is looking a little lacklustre for spring, now’s the time to replace those dull, winter hues and matte finishes with bold brights and pops of shimmer. Bag a few of these key products from the new season’s make-up collection and nail spring-summer’s hottest trends with sunny ease.

Lips: Swap blackberry for coral
Blackberry stained lips reigned supreme in autumn/winter, but spring/summer pouts call for a pop of juicy oranges and corals. Love it or hate it, they’re the key colours for spring so be bold with a strong, matte-finish lipstick or, if this feels too intense, opt for softer, pastel versions in the form of a gloss.

MAC Lipstick in Morange, £11.26, www.maccosmetics.co.uk
Nails: Swap navy blue for green
Deep petrol blues were seen on the manicured mitts of every fashionista worth her style salt last season but, predictably, we’re lightening up for spring. Not so predictably, the colour of the season for nails is green – but before you recoil in horror, think soft, pastel shades of grass green or summery, tropical hues in aqua and cyan. And remember, nails should be short, round and neat to be on-trend.

Cheeks: Swap berry for pink
While a smudge of berry was key for autumn/winter faces, many a rosy cheek was seen on the spring/summer catwalks. Jonathan Saunders took the lead and got cheeky with a fierce, bubblegum pink flush, whilst Anna Sui and Lanvin showcased ladylike, delicate rosebud blushes.

Shadow: Swap browns for brights
Whilst safe and smoky is key for winter, spring/summer beauty demands a flash of eye-popping colour in bold, beautiful shades such as turquoise blue, flamingo pink, sunny yellow and pretty purple. Look to the catwalks for inspiration, and adapt your look from runway to real-life with subtle splashes of neon around the outer corners like Jonathan Saunders, a smudge of rainbow colour across lids like Gucci, or a slick of strong shadow liner around lashes á la Miu Miu.

Mascara: Swap heavy for waterproof
We all love a loaded lash come party season, but once summer hits Blighty’s shores, you gotta go waterproof. Why not amp up your new season’s look with coloured mascara? Sea blues are especially ‘holiday’.

Style: Swap smoky for colour-blocking
Colour blocking is one of the key trends for spring/summer 2009, specifically, wearing blocks of loud colour rather than the smoky, smudgings of autumn/winter. Be brave with strong, colour explosions across lids and lash lines – stick with kohl pencils or dampen your eyeshadow to get precise, linear, graphic blocks of electric blues, sunny yellows and neon greens.

Colour: Swap co-ordinating for clashing
All the classic rules are being broken in the boldest sense this season, as we see a shift from co-ordinating make-up shades to loud and proud colour clashes. The emergence of all things Eighties in fashion, music and make-up means that ‘overt energy’ and ‘playful palettes’ become the key beauty buzzwords for 2009. Team psychedelic splashes of electric blue and sunflower lids with fuchsia pink lips and orange nails – anything goes!

Coverage: Swap pale for bronze
Whereas English Rose-paleness governed the autumn/winter catwalks, the new season sees shimmering faces regain their sunny glow – banish that heavy powder compact and enter the bronze age á la Zac Posen, Tuleh and Prada.

Look to the shimmering runways of Nathan Jenden, Vivienne Westwood Red Label and Pucci for inspiration - skin should look hydrated with high-tech radiance.Get The Look: Chantecaille La Baleine Blanche Face, £85, www.hqhair.com
