Have you got an eco-friendly vagina?
Sure, you're keeping it green; you separate your plastics from your cardboards, you only buy organic and you've used your bike over four times this year! So what the heck can Green Peace have to say about your lady garden?
Well it turns out quite a lot: From vegan condoms to organic tampons, when it comes to sex, periods and the land of your labia there's a whole lot more you can do to become a true eco warrior.
Are you using ethical condoms? The answer to that is probably: 'How the heck do I know? I'm just trying to remember that banana demonstration from school!' But our go-to sexual protection is taking a major toll on the planet.
Most condom manufactures don't use sustainable materials, their packaging is rarely eco-friendly and, sorry vegans, but it's bad news for you too: Condoms often rely on animal testing before landing in the pharmacy.
Thankfully, Australian brand Glyde, are doing things differently with the first ethical, vegan & fair trade condom. What's more their products are non-toxic making them safer and healthier. But the best news? That gross latex smell is totally gone.
Organic tampons: Unfortunately, your periods can cause as much discomfort to the planet as they do to you. Sadly, our handbag essentials are surprisingly un-eco friendly; often made of non-organic cotton, which has a hugely negative effect on the environment - and even on us!
Dr. Maggie Ney, the co-director of the Women's Clinic at the Akasha Center in Santa Monica explains, "Because the vaginal walls are incredibly permeable, anything in a tampon can make it to the bloodstream, which isn't great when we're talking about toxin-laden [non-organic] cotton".
So for a safer 'greener' period, TOTM (Time of The Month) manufacture tampons using non-GM organic cotton, in a fair trade environment. They've also opted for recyclable and 100% biodegradable tampon applicators.
Ok, if someone was going to find another use for coconut oil, it was always going to be Gwyneth Paltrow; the woman who proudly steams her vagina.
Lube (we know you just giggled too) it turns out can be incredibly harmful to our lady parts, with many on the market containing parabens, which have been linked to hormone imbalances, infertility and even some cancers. So it's unsurprising that Gwyneth thinks this is yet another area we should be keeping o-naturel. Not only does she recommend reaching for your increasingly handy tub of coconut oil (although be warned this isn't compatible with latex condoms), but the actress also recommends the brand Sliquid, over on her blog, Goop.
When you think lingerie, you're more likely to follow that thought with sex than bamboo, right? Well, sorry to kill the mood… again, but have you considered how sustainable your fave lacy undies are lately?
Luckily for us, London based, LuvaHuva (pronounced Lover Huva) have! They're making pants that are both sexy and sustainable, using 100% organic cotton, bamboo and soy fabrics. Adding beautiful detail by recycling vintage lace. A win for the environment and our knicker drawers!
When it comes to recycling, sex toys might be a step too far for your inner sexual/eco warrior, but yes, it's a thing. SexToyRecyling.com exists and is here to take away your unwanted sex toy (because it's broken or because it holds reminders of a broken heart…). They then thoroughly sterilise it (thank F**k), grind it up and remold it into someone else's new best buzzing buddy.
What's important to remember is that the adult toy industry remains largely unregulated and therefore so are the materials they use to mold their products.
A non-recycled, yet eco alternative, however is Leaf. Made from 100% silicone phthalate-free material, powered by rechargeable batteries and shipped to your door in recycled packaging: A pretty safe bet for an eco friendly orgasm.
Keeping it clean - and green - down 'there' kind of need to go a little further than the usual 'lather rinse repeat' routine we've gotten into up top. Because our intimate areas rely on a careful balance of bacteria to stay healthy it's important to use products, which are un-scented, non-toxic and that don't undo our natural balance.
We love Yes, who not only created a range of natural lubes, but also specialise in 100% organic intimate washes. They also pride themselves in never relying on animal testing to produce their products. Clean vagina and conscious? Hells yeah!
