As we await the Sex And The City reboot, we take a look at the distinct beauty identities of the original cast
Love it or hate it (or love to hate it), Sex And The City is emblematic of the era of sexual empowerment, female independence and, of course, self expression through fashion. The series tackled topics that other popular TV hadn't dared to broach, from anal sex to ageism, and although some of it hasn't aged too well (after all, a lot has changed since it first aired over 20 years ago), we're hoping the upcoming reboot, And Just Like That, will have caught up with the times and continue to start conversations about subjects deemed controversial.
One thing that has proven timeless, however, is the fashion and beauty choices of the four characters. To this day, we still look back and lust over Carrie's vast collection of Manolo Blahniks, Samantha's skin-skimming, slinky dresses, Miranda's power suits, and Charlotte's penchant for preppy knits and pearl earrings.
Then there's the beauty. Carrie was famous for her natural curls, glowing skin and no-make-up makeup. Samantha was all about her sleek blonde hair, red lipstick and, of course, that legendary chemical peel. Miranda was the queen of smokey eyes and red hair, either rocking a tousled bob or a spiky pixie crop. Finally, Charlotte was the embodiment of a bouncy blow dry and a dust of blush that perfectly matched her lipstick.
While their tastes may well have changed (plus, we are yet to meet the ‘new Samantha'), we thought we would put together a beauty haul of the products the OG Sex And The City crew would probably be buying today…
Charlotte
Charlotte's calling card is her bouncy, New York blow dry and she wouldn't go one day without applying Kérastase Elixir Ultime Huile to lengths and ends to keep them strong and shiny (but not too shiny, of course). She also would be a fan of the sophisticated Westman Atelier products by makeup artist Gucci Westman, especially the Baby Cheeks multipurpose tint, which she would apply to her cheeks and lips before popping into her purse. She'd also be in the know on all the hottest, and most exclusive, skincare brands, which is why she would be using Dr Barbara Sturm Face Cream to keep her skin hydrated and glowing. Finally, Charlotte wouldn't be complete without a spritz of Chanel Coco Mademoiselle – a fresh but vibrant scent.
Samantha
We know Samantha is always at the forefront of beauty treatments, and would jump at the chance to test out the latest skincare tech, which is why we reckon she'd love Face Gym Electrical Muscle Stimulation Mask, a wearable device that gives facial muscles a vigorous workout to lift, sculpt and define as well as boost circulation and brighten. For her hair, she would use a salon quality purple shampoo, like Redken Colour Extend Blondage, to knock any brassiness out of her blonde highlights and her favourite lipstick would have to be a seductive red by Tom Ford Beauty. Her scent of choice would be Frederic Malle Carnal Flower, perhaps the most stunningly seductive fragrance in existence.
Miranda
When it comes to Miranda's makeup choices, you can bet she will either be rocking a smouldering, smokey eye or else, an orangey-red lipstick to complement her red hair. Charlotte Tilbury Hollywood Flawless Eye Filter Palette in Diva Lights is precisely the shades Miranda loves, while Dior's Rouge Couture Colour Lipstick in Rouge Cinema provides the perfect velvet finish. Her fragrance would be reflective of her personality; hard to define and comprised of conflicting facets. Byredo's Mixed Emotions seems fitting, thanks to the juxtaposition of sweet cassis and woody papyrus. Finally, whether her hair is short and spiky, or a little longer and gently tousled, Miranda would need a great styling wax on her bathroom shelf, just like OUAI Matte Pomade.
Carrie
Carrie is best known for her naturally curly hair, for which she would call upon Living Proof Curl Definer to make sure they always looked their bounciest and most hydrated. Her makeup bag would mainly be made up of complexion enhancing products, including Charlotte Tilbury Healthy Glow Tinted Moisturiser and Summer Fridays Lip Butter Balm. For her fragrance, Carrie would probably pick Giorgio Armani My Way, a contemporary floral fragrance that aims to encompass meaningful and intense encounters.
