The most politically-driven speeches at the SAG Awards 2017
Following the political unrest in the US over the weekend, it was inevitable that the 2017 SAG Awards would see a number of politically-driven, anti-Trump speeches. We've picked out some of the most memorable quotes from the evening:
“We will shelter freaks and outcasts, those who have no home,” he said. “We will get past the lies. We will hunt monsters. And when we are at a loss amidst the hypocrisy and casual violence of certain individuals and institutions, we will, as per Chief Jim Hopper, punch some people in the face when they seek to destroy what we have envisioned for ourselves and the marginalized.” - David Harbour, Stranger Things
“This story is of unity and this story is about what happens when we put our differences aside ... Love wins.” - Taraji P Henson, speaking about Hidden Figures.
“What I’ve learned from working on Moonlight is seeing what happens when you persecute people. They fold into themselves. And what I was so grateful about in having the opportunity to play Juan was, playing a gentleman who saw a young man folding into himself as a result of the persecution of his community, and taking that opportunity to uplift him and tell him that he mattered and that he was O.K. and accept him and, uh — I hope that we do a better job of that,”" - Mahershala Ali, of Moonlight
“My father fled religious persecution in Nazi-occupied France. I’m an American patriot. And I love this country, and because I love this country, I am horrified by its blemishes, and this immigrant ban is a blemish, and it is un-American.” - Julia Louis-Dreyfus
“Silence is not golden at this time.” - Sarah Paulson
Ashton Kutcher welcomed “everyone in airports that belong in my America. You are a part of the fabric of who we are. And we love you, and we welcome you.”
“Things are very inexcusable and scary and need action. I’m so grateful to be part of a group of people that cares.” - Emma Stone
"The Doomsday Clock has been moved to two and a half minutes before midnight. And this award came just in the nick of time... What sign should I make for the next march? So much to do.” - Lily Tomlin
Alongside the speeches, there was also signs of political protest on the red carpet. Big Bang Theory star Simon Helberg and his wife Jocelyn Towne proudly wore signs and body paint reading, 'Let them in,' and 'Refugees welcome'.
