Milan Fashion Week Trends Round-Up
The most va va voom glamorous stop on the fashion circuit, Milan Fashion Week always injects a hit of sex appeal and old school elegance to the season. Click through the gallery below to see the top highlights of the week.
InDigitalThe Catwalk Moment
This season designers are having a love affair with pregnant women on the catwalks (see Temperley and Giles), but it was Dolce and Gabbana who cemented Autumn/Winter 2015 as the season of mamma. Sending model mothers down the runway with their babies and children, featuring a pregnant Bianca Balti and embellishing countless looks with childhood scribbles and odes to mother dearest, the duo made the point loud and clear. Mum’s the word.
IndigitalThe Debut
The most talked about outing of the season was inevitably Alessandro Michele’s first turn at Gucci. Sending out a rollcall of eccentric ladylike ensembles (with more than a hint of this season’s mega-muse, Margot Tenenbaum – see Lacoste and Bally for more), the newly installed designer tempered Gucci’s quintessential sexiness with off-kilter geek chic.
IndigitalTrends: Geometry
Inspired by the linear geometry of artists like Mondrian, several Milanese designers brought a mathematical flavour to motifs and prints. At Fendi we saw blocks of colour emblazoned across coats and trousers, at Salvatore Ferragamo there was plenty more de Stijl influence on show while MSGM created geometric interest with long scarves and mini skirts littered with cut out squares.

As ever in Milan we were spoiled for choice when it came to footwear. Two of the talking point shoes came straight from the catwalk – Gucci’s yeti loafers and Prada’s pretty pastel Mary Janes. Also debuting a fine selection of soles was handbag designer Paula Cademartori. Distinctive, pop-bright and complete with all the polish you’d expect, Paula’s collection is set to be a major hit with the fash pack.
InDigitalThe Street Style Favourite
Following on from the success of Milan based labels MSGM and Stella Jean, Au Jour Le Jour has become the street styler’s catnip dujour. With their new disco inspired collection – just the thing for the modern nightclubber – they’re set to convert even more fans.
IndigitalTrend: Twee
A buttoned-up sensibility of debutante demureness has spread through Milan’s collections. Miuccia Prada subverted the hyper girlishness of her pastels with sci-fi look fabrics while Lorenzo Serafini gave his woman feminine ruffled collars and cuffs and clashing ditsy clover prints.

Ever one to nail the details, the conceptually considered food of the week came courtesy of Mrs Prada. Miniature pink and pistachio coloured triangle sandwiches and tiny rounds topped with smoked salmon perfectly complemented her pastel laden collection.
IndigitalTrend: Electric Colour
Primary pigments and no-holds barred colour was one of the major stories of Milan. From Versace’s riot of blue, green, yellow and red to Pablo Coppola’s ultra brights at Bally, the new season says that fortune favours the bold.
InDigitalThe Departure
Milan’s jet set party king, Peter Dundas confirmed that A/W 2015 would be his last outing for Emilio Pucci. Over the past six years he has infused the label with sexy appeal and a bohemian sense of luxury. If rumours are true he may be heading back to Roberto Cavalli where he honed his talent for print – watch this space.
Moschino/InstagramThe Goodie Bag
Every guest at Jeremy Scott’s Looney Tunes inspired Moschino show was bestowed a Moschino Toy fragrance complete with its teddy bear packaging. Super cute collectible.
IndigitalBig Boots
The thigh high cuissardes boot is proving ever more popular. It featured in endless Milan shows including: Moschino, Versace, MSGM, Emilo Pucci….This season it comes in orange, yellow and purple – so forget subtle and give the high octane thigh-high a go.
IndigitalThe Hashtag
This season the symbols of the millennial generation made their way on to the actual catwalk. Donatella Versace embellished her ultra sexy finale dresses with sequin hashtags and @ symbols, bringing the message home – Versace is just as re-grammable for the new generation as it would have been for the old.
