A cool £23 million.

As for its worth, according to Harper's Bazaar Tiffany & Co. famously published an advertisement for the diamond in 1972 in the New York Times, offering any interested parties 24 hours to purchase the stone for $5,000,000 (approximately $30,000,000 today)."

Almost unbelievably, there were no bidders.

The diamond was first discovered in South Africa in 1877, and acquired by Charles Lewis Tiffany one year later for $18,000. The stone was then taken to the jewelry house's chief gemologist who supervised as the stone was cut into a cushion-cut with 82 facets (bear in mind that a typical cut has 58).
