Is khaki the new black? GLAMOUR's Fashion Director Natalie Hartley thinks so
Is khaki the new black? Sat on the tube this morning I decided my thoughts are justified for both men and women. There seems to be a welcome change in the sea of black that appears to be everyone's easiest 'wearable' colour. But should we look further afield?
Inside Glamour HQ, I spot a couple of people wearing khaki too and think maybe this is the new sartorial way forward; it's an easy wearable colour. Khaki acts as a blank canvas that can be worn head-to-toe, with other shades of green, against strong bright pops of colour or more classically with neutral tones. I love this colour as it can also be worn to suit all styles. Whether your vibe is more safari chic, minimal or utility, there is something for everyone.
This shade of green looks great with all skin tones and doesn't wash you out as much as black does. It's as flattering as black can be in terms of its slimming qualities - especially if you go for a darker tone. A good pair of khaki trousers can be worn with a black roll neck, which requires zero effort. The two 'safe' colours together gives your outfit a stronger sense of style, giving the impression you've considered your look more artfully than a 'lazy' head-to-toe black outfit.
It's chic and elegant, yet has a 'street' quality too so also looks great with denim. It's a colour that can be trans-seasonal so will work hard in your wardrobe all year round.
I recently had a sneak peek at the pre-fall collection for Celine where this colour appeared again. Those wanting to tap into a bigger trend should start wearing khaki now and be ahead of the game.

My favourite pieces for spring (of which I have already bought!) are the Vetements khaki green tracksuit and I would wear it with a black ankle boot and add a longer length khaki coat or contrast it against a black with a oversized biker jacket. Designers like Versace and Balmain have always been behind the trend and Mango features this colour heavily in the new Kendall Jenner ad campaign so take your pick, these are the best of the rest:
