Katy Perry: She's a (fashion) firework

Our December cover girl has had quite a fashion trajectory, but on reflection a lot of her style seems closely linked to her hit singles. Take a look...
Getty ImagesCalfornia Gurls
"I know a place/
Where the grass is really greener/
Warm, wet and wild/
There must be something in the water/
Sippin' gin and juice/
Laying underneath the palm trees"
That's our Katy, the original West Coast gal. This palm tree number is a quite literal take on one of our cover girl's most famous singles. But a bikini top would have worked, too?
Getty ImagesPart Of Me
"This is the part of me/
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no/
This is the part of me/
That you’re never gonna ever take away from me, no"
I mean... There's quite actually a chunk missing from KP's Viktor & Rolf gown. Sure this was made several years before the singer divorced Russell Brand, but c'mon, this is fashion foreshadowing at its best...
Rex FeaturesRoar
"I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire/
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar/
Louder, louder than a lion/
Cause I am a champion and you’re gonna hear me roar"
To some this may look like a costume, but not to our gal Katy. The ebony-haired singer really commits to a theme, and her latest - and super successful single - is no different - ears and all!
Rex FeaturesWaking Up In Vegas
"Shut up and put your money where your mouth is/
That's what you get for waking up in Vegas/
Get up and shake the glitter off your clothes now/
That's what you get for waking up in Vegas"
Did someone say Vegas? We'd wager a pretty hefty bet that you'd guess the theme of this tune even without the lyrics...
Rex FeaturesChoose Your Battles
[i]"Choose your battles, babe/
Then you win the war/
Stop digging your own grave/
There's so much to live for"<?I>
Camo? Check. Badass boots? Done. Fishnets? Obviously. Katy was working this look in the video and promotion of Part of Me, but we gotta say, it's certainly more apt for this lesser known jam.
PA PhotosDiamonds
"A diamond/
It won't ever bend/
A diamond/
Cause they're ladies/
Best friends/
A diamond/
But there/
There has to be more/
Than what these pirates/
Are gambling for"
The singer rarely strays far from the glitz and glam of the roulette table (See: [i]Waking Up In Vegas </i). Here she's found a way to tie in her love affair with bling, look-at-me hair hues and a hemline that ain't for a less-confident lady than she - and we applaud her all the more for it!
PA PhotosDressin' Up
"Tonight, I'm gonna come alive/
Make you forget about your nine to five/
Are you ready for your blood to rise?/
Tonight's the night/
I'm dressing up for you"
This really marked one of the first times we'd seen Katy opt for all-out glamour, sans gimmicks, instead of anything cutesy. She certainly suits 'dressing up' if you ask us.
PA PhotosE.T.
"Boy, you're an alien/
Your touch so foreign/
It's supernatural/
Extraterrestrial"
Who else could carry off sexy alien eyes like the ebony-haired singer? Lover of a unique blend of cartoon-couture, Katy pulls off this strapless style statement with sophistication - eyelashes and all.
PA PhotosFirework
"Baby, you're a firework/
Come on, let your colours burst/
Make 'em go "Oh, oh, oh"/
You're gonna leave 'em all in awe, awe, awe"
You just knew she was going to totally work this song, right? If soaring, dazzling pyrotechnics isn't Katy, we don't know what is.
PA PhotosLast Friday Night
"Last Friday night/
Yeah, we maxed our credit cards/
And got kicked out of the bar/
So we hit the boulevard"
But she's not all sizzle and shine, after all this is the girl who put herself in the place of her school-age self to craft one of the catchiest tunes we've heard on the airwaves in recent years. Apparently Katy's teenage self had a penchant for playsuits, roll-necks and metal head gear. #Work!
PA PhotosTeenage Dream
"You make me feel/
Like I'm livin' a/
Teenage dream/
The way you turn me on/
I can't sleep/
Let's run away and/
Don't ever look back,/
Don't ever look back"
...But give her a couple of years, and she's captain of the squad. Perry comes over all Kelly Kapowski in a sporty vest and flippy skirt, perfectly epitomising the teenage dream of many.
