9 fragrance secrets from the iconic Jo Malone London, and the products to buy now that will make you (and your home) smell incredible
Name a fragrance brand more iconic than Jo Malone. No? Us neither.
There's nothing better than receiving a luxurious scent or candle lovingly encased in a ribbon adorned, yellow bag. But have you ever stopped to consider what makes Jo Malone so special? We've been pondering that very question, so we decided to find out.
We called on Emma South, Fragrance & Lifestyle Expert at Jo Malone London, to share nine fascinating things you never knew about the iconic fragrance house. Talk about scent secrets!
1. When creating a scent, Celine Roux, Vice President of Fragrance Development, takes the Master Perfumers (the fancy title for the men and women who concoct the famous fragrances) on a 'truly immersive journey' (a.k.a they get to go on incredible day trips and holidays). Whether it's enjoying Afternoon Tea at Claridges, exploring the Namibian desert to discover the finest Myrrh or climbing trees in Sherwood Forest, the Master Perfumers live the best life. Where do we apply?
2. A lot of inspirations are from Celine's personal experiences (the Wood Sage & Sea Salt Collection was inspired by a family holiday along the Jurassic coast). Because of the sentimental value, on average, a fragrance will take 2-3 years from idea to reality (and GLAMOUR agrees it's worth the wait).
3. Ever fear that you'll arrive at an event and smell your beloved Jo Malone scent on (gasp), someone else? Fret no more. Each new Jo Malone London Fragrance is actually designed so you can wear and layer it with any other from the collection, meaning there are limitless possibilities to create your own scent. In fact, there are over 450 combinations you can create (this is known as Fragrance Combining, for all your scent savvies out there).
4. To ensure they really are at the top of their game, the scent experts only use the highest quality ingredients in their fragrances. "Some ingredients, like the orris root used in our Orris & Sandalwood Cologne Intense, have been prized for centuries and take five years at a time to cultivate," says Emma. "For our newest cologne, Jasmine Sambac & Marigold, our preferred Jasmine is Jasmine Sambac, as it is the queen of the Indian flower markets. It is carefully handpicked at dawn when its scent is most exquisite and before the first rays of sun touch the blooms." Talk about fancy.
5. The brand pride themselves on innovating and achieving perfumery firsts. As Emma explains: "We are the first brand to create a roasted oak absolute for the English Oak Collection and also to perfect perfumery infusions of six of the world's rarest teas for our Rare Teas Collection."
6. Some of the fragrance's names as so hush-hush that they actually had code names before they were launched. Can you guess what was nicknamed 'Captain Jack Sparrow'?!
7. 52 Gloucester Place is Jo Malone's London Georgian Townhouse, where all the creativity happens (and many a party is thrown). An interior masterclass in black and cream, stepping inside was designed to feel just like entering one of their boxes. When can we move in?
8. Each candle is hand poured and passes through 16 artisans in its creation. SIXTEEN!
9. Each candle has a different wick. While all are 100% cotton, each is a different weave or width depending on what will give the best burn performance for that fragrance.
Who knew?!
