8 black (not boring) dresses we'd like to see worn by Golden Globes nominees
The call for stars on the Golden Globes red carpet to wear black dresses has officially got a name.
And with the Time’s Up initiative attracting more and more actresses by the day (everyone from Reese Witherspoon to Meryl Streep and Emma Stone are fully on board), stylists are battling to bag the best black gowns for their celebrity clients.
But before you yawn at the prospect of an all-black sartorial line up hear us out – if stars are restricted on colour then it’s likely that they’ll optimise creativity elsewhere (if there are no spiky mohawks or dresses with a 75ft Rihanna-esque train we’ll be disappointed).
We’ve brainstormed the latest catwalks and paired our favourite looks with 8 of the style-savviest nominees. Expect masses of sheer and sheen. Here are the actresses and what we hope they'll be wearing...

What might she wear? She’s been experimenting more with fabric recently and proved a fan of Maria Grazia Chiuri’s Dior direction in embroidered tulle at last year’s Glamour Women of the Year awards. We imagine she’d add a more substantial slip beneath this layered look for the red carpet.
REXWho? Margot Robbie
What might she wear? Unafraid of the moody hue, Margot has already worn a number of full-length black numbers throughout her red carpet career. To stand out we envisage a shorter choppier hem à la this SS18 slice of Givenchy.

What might she wear? A fan of a frill, Michelle’s feminine aesthetic lends itself perfectly to Erdem’s frou –frou frocks. This layered AW17 masterpiece has the perfect sheer balance so as not to drown her slight frame.

What might she wear? Despite her previous loyalty to designer Tadashi Shoji, we’d be keen to see Octavia's penchant for a feminine neckline and cinched-in waist handed over to Dolce & Gabbana this year. Midi-length hemline optional.

What might she wear? Long sleeves, defined waist and – of course – the black hue make this Gucci look a perfect option for Meryl while the reflective fabric keeps it feeling fresh. Often one of the most modestly dressed on the red carpet, we wouldn’t be surprised if this thigh-high split was lowered somewhat.

What might she wear? Typically a very feminine dresser, Claire has frequently worn sheer black on the red carpet. To make a bolder statement this year we’d like to see her in this more directional Ralph & Russo number with a striking cross neckline and sequin embellishment.
REXWho? Reese Witherspoon
What might she wear? Loyal to a streamlined shape, Reese would do well to opt for this Versace gown with its thigh split and double-scooped neckline adding a modern point of interest where she may otherwise opt for her fail-safe strapless formula.
