Films To Watch In 2014

It's going to be an exciting year at the cinema if these flicks are anything to go by…

Men, Women & Children
Stars: Ansel Elgort, Dean Norris, Adam Sandler, Jennifer Garner, Judy Greer, Rosemarie DeWitt
What’s It About? The film is a dry, poignant but also often humorous look at several modern afflictions, including broken families, internet porn, anorexia, gaming addictions and overly controlling parents. It's a quirky, unusual take on a group of people who should know each other better than they really do.
Release Date: 5th December 2014
Fast & Furious 7
Stars: Vin Diesel, Paul Walker, Dwayne Johnson, Elsa Pataky and Michelle Rodriguez
What’s It About? We're sure you haven't missed even one of the various Fast and Furious films to date - and you can be sure that the seventh installment will contain the same fast cars, fast pace and fast talking as its predecessors.
Release Date: April 2015
The Inbetweeners 2
Stars: Those four naughty boys you know so well from the TV series
What’s It About? First we saw Neil, Will, Jay and Simon going wild in England in the legendary TV series, then in Greece in The Inbetweeners 1 - and now it's time to take it up a notch as the group travel to Australia for a "mental gap year". We can't wait to see what cringeworthy moments ensue.
Release Date: Wednesday 6 August 2014
WENNLove, Rosie
Stars: Sam Claflin & Lily Collins
What’s It About? That age-old question: is it worth risking a friendship for the chance of true love? is investigated in this adaptation of Cecelia Ahern’s epistolary novel about two childhood pals separated by circumstances outside their control. What we’re most looking forward to seeing how much chemistry this pair have on screen – as well as their Irish accents.
Release Date: TBC

Gone Girl
Stars: Ben Affleck & Rosamund Pike
What’s It About? We don’t want to give too much away - just in case you’re one of the few who haven’t ready Gillian Flynn’s crime bestseller. But what we can tell you is that Ben Affleck plays Nick Dunne, a husband who comes under suspicion when his “beautiful, clever wife Amy” goes missing on their fifth anniversary. Twists, turns and changing alliances: we can’t wait to see if this film does the book justice (fingers crossed already).
Release Date: 3 October
Divergent
Stars: Shailene Woodley, Kate Winslet & Theo James
What’s It About? Imagine Twilight meets The Hunger Games and you’re about halfway there. A teenager with a special mind resists being controlled by the authoritarian society she lives in – she’s divergent you see. If the trailer tells us anything, it’s that Kate Winslet’s going to be pretty scary as leader Jeanine Matthews.

Noah
Stars: Russell Crowe, Emma Watson, Logan Lerman & Douglas Booth
What’s It About? As you’d expect there’s animals two-by-two, a deluge of water and an exceedingly hunky Noah (in the form of Russell Crowe). This is the Old Testament, the Hollywood way and it’s epic, with plenty of aqua-related special effects and even a turn from Sir Anthony Hopkins.

RexVeronica Mars
Stars: Kristen Bell, Krysten Ritter & James Franco
What’s It About? This cult TV show was transformed for the silver screen after it famously became the fastest fundraising project on Kickstarter last year. The flick sees the return of the private detective, who’s now all grown up, as well as a few (very handsome) famous friends, in the shape of James Franco and New Girl’s Max Greenfield.
Release Date: 14 March (USA); UK TBC

Pacific Coast NewsWinter’s Tale
Stars: Colin Farrell, Jessica Brown Findlay & Russell Crowe
What’s It About? It’s 1916 and Colin Farrell plays Irish rogue Peter Lake, who falls for a dying heiress as he’s burgling her New York mansion (as you do). Fast-forward to the present day and Peter’s been reincarnated so, you guessed it, he sets out trying to save his lost love. From the trailer, we can deduce that this film has almost as much snow as romance.Release Date: 21 February

Grace of Monaco
Stars: Nicole Kidman, Parker Posey & Milo Ventimiglia
What’s It About? No film year would be complete without a royal biopic and we’re hoping this one will fare better than 2013’s Diana. It sees Nicole Kidman take on the role of Grace Kelly, as she struggles to manage her regal marriage with her own identity. The flick has already caused tension with Monaco’s ruling family, who have described it as "needlessly glamorised and historically inaccurate". Ouch.Release Date: 14 March

WENNSerena
Stars: Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence & Rhys Ifans
What’s It About? No doubt movie bosses are banking on the chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence paying off yet again (they’ve starred together three times and counting) in this Depression-era drama about a timber businessman, whose empire is threatened because his wife Serena (J-Law) is unable to have children.Release Date: Late 2014

The Rover
Stars: Robert Pattinson & Guy Pearce
What’s It About? R-Patz does a good job of distancing himself from his heartthrob image in this chilling crime thriller. He stars as Reynolds, an injured gang member, who joins forces with one of their victims (Pearce) in the Australian desert in an attempt to hunt them down. Expect some sweaty, outback shots of both Pattinson and Pearce.Release Date: TBC

Before I Go To Sleep
Stars: Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth & Mark Strong
What’s It About? This psychological thriller sees Nicole Kidman play a woman suffering from amnesia, who wakes up each day with no recollection of who she is. Her doctor (Strong) helps her with her recovery by encouraging her to keep a journal but she discovers that it might not hold the truth to her real past.

Her
Stars: Joaquin Phoenix & Scarlett Johansson
What’s It About? Theodore is a lonely writer… until he finds his perfect woman in the sexy Samantha. Sound like your average rom-com? It would be if Samantha wasn’t a computerised operating system designed to meet Theodore’s every need.
Release Date: 14 February

WENNMaps To The Stars
Stars: Robert Pattinson, Mia Wasikowska & Julianne Moore
What’s It About? R-Patz has teamed up with Cosmopolis director David Cronenberg again for this satirical drama about how Hollywood affects the lives of two former child stars (life mirroring art, no?). He plays a limo driver and aspiring actor, who befriends the daughter of an acting family. Just don’t expect things to turn out well for him in the end.Release Date: TBC

Jupiter Ascending
Stars: Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Douglas Booth & Eddie Redmayne
What’s It About? If sci-fi is more your thang, you’d better start getting exciting about Jupiter Ascending, and not just because of the serious eye candy among its eclectic cast. Set in a distant dystopia, where humans are near the bottom of the pecking order, Mila Kunis stars as a destitute young woman targeted by the Queen of the Universe (great title BTW), because she threatens her power.

Cue the panic and hilarity.Release Date: 5 August
GettyHow To Catch A Monster
Stars: Saoirse Ronan, Matt Smith, Eva Mendes & Christina Hendricks
What’s It About? Ryan Gosling might not appear in front of the camera (we know, we know) but we’re intrigued to see how his directorial debut will pan out. It’s all very fantastical, following a single mother who’s swept into a dark underworld, while her son finds his way into a secret underwater town.Release Date: Summer 2014
RexCamp X-Ray
Stars: Kristen Stewart & Julia Duffy
What’s It About? Kristen’s all dressed up in khaki as she stars as Amy Cole, a soldier trying to shed her small-town-America origins for a tour of duty in Iraq. Not everything goes to plan however, and she finds herself as a Guantanamo Bay guard, who strikes up an unlikely friendship with one of its detainees.Release Date: TBC

Untitled Brad Pitt/David Ayer Project
Stars: Brad Pitt, Logan Lerman & Shia LaBeouf
What’s It About? This film hasn’t got a confirmed titled yet (it’s previously been credited as Fury) but that’s not dampened the anticipation surrounding it.
