The best jackets from the autumn/ winter runways, according to a fashion editor
One of the best things about the change in weather is that it gives us the chance to experiment with layers, making it the perfect time to break out those transitional jackets. From classic trench coats to modern leather or bomber styles, jackets really are the ultimate finishing touch for any outfit. Every season, I find myself asking what the jacket of the season will be or what jacket is best suited to my style – so after a lot of shopping and scrolling, I've rounded up the most iconic (and staple) outerwear styles that you will want to live in for the upcoming months.
This season we're embracing structured silhouettes, as seen at Jacquemus and Stella McCartney's FW24 runway collections, while also leaning into the relaxed, oversized looks that dominated the Prada and Tod's shows. The beauty of outerwear lies in its versatility – whether you're reaching for something tailored and sleek or effortlessly loose and cosy, there's something very satisfying about styling outerwear to reflect both the season and your personal style. The right piece can elevate an entire look and believe me, there really is a perfect jacket out there for everyone.
Ahead, I've selected my top trends from AW24 street style and runways, and my key designer outerwear pieces to shop this season…
1. The leather midi jacket
The revival of leather jackets is not slowing down and choices are aplenty – but if we had to pick one, it would be this Bottega Veneta midi version. With its impeccable craftsmanship, sleek bonded seams and rich olive tone, it's certainly a refined take on the classic leather jacket. The longer silhouette adds an element of androgyny – making it versatile enough to wear with everything from tailored trousers to casual denim for timeless style.
2.The trench coat
The trench coat is a certified staple season after season, and today it serves as a key item in any capsule wardrobe. Undoubtedly, it's not the warmest of jackets – so usually makes for an ideal autumn piece – but it's versatile, pairs back everything and is perfect for layering over long layers. My pick of the season is from the latest Barbour and Alexa Chung capsule collection – an updated classic with a longline shape that can be styled with skirts or trousers, and will take you through working week to weekend.
3. The cropped faux fur
If we've learnt anything from fashion week street style recently, it's that you need a faux fur jacket. Take cues from the likes of Hailey Bieber and Bella Hadid and style with a 90s mini dress or skirt, or pair back to a tailored trouser for a more practical – but chic – day outfit. Faux fur coats are great for layering and adding unexpected layers… a fuzzy hoodie will make your look less mob wife and more Phoebe Philo.
4. The crisp blazer
No autumn wardrobe is complete without a smart blazer that can help you look sharp in seconds. Every season, designers reimagine the style staples in a myriad of ways—be it spliced and diced at Sacai or covered in tweed at Chanel—but sometimes all we need is a perfectly-tailored blazer that will stand the test of time. Blazé Milano founded by former stylists and editors Corrada Rodriguez D'Acri, Delfina Pinardi and Maria Sole Torlonia have been crafting such jackets for the last decade, and every self-respecting fashionista needs a piece for her wardrobe.
5. The leopard print coat
The most refreshing thing about the recent re-birth of leopard print is that designers treated it as a neutral. Whether it was leopard print tights at Paco Rabanne and Blumarine or an elevated look like at Dior, animal print was integrated into everyday wear in a way that feels contemporary. By embracing it as a wardrobe staple rather than a bold statement, designers have given leopard print a modern, understated edge, making it easier than ever to incorporate into any outfit. This Jean Paul Gaultier piece is a good start and has so many luti-wear options - great with jeans and a tee or belted with a boot.
6. The short trench
Taking inspiration from the traditional trench, this refreshed classic from The Row is the definition of effortlessly cool. The craft and subtle detailing make the short trench coat feel both super polished and easy to wear, the ideal finishing touch to many looks for the season ahead. With its clean lines and simple design, it’s the kind of jacket that quietly pulls everything together without trying too hard.
7. The lumberjack jacket
The unexpected hero coat of the season goes to the check lumberjack jacket. After drooling over check layers in The Row's SS25 lookbook, it became clear that this once-rugged staple is making its comeback to luxury fashion. Not only is this one of the warmest and most practical outerwear jacket options, but it also brings an off-duty edge to any wardrobe. Prada’s lumberjack jacket is the ideal marriage of country and city, offering a polished take on utilitarian style. It's the kind of standout piece that will get countless re-wears in your wardrobe during the colder seasons.
