5 denim trends redefining the current fashion landscape in 2025
Denim is a style staple, no matter the season, city, or occasion, it will always prevail. We've seen denim trends mark key cultural moments for women through the decades, from Marilyn Monroe’s denim looks in the 1950s to Brooke Shields’ iconic Calvin Klein ads in the 1980s. Then came the 1990s, the era where denim-on-denim reigned supreme. Who could forget Britney and Justin’s iconic red-carpet moment? At the same time, minimalist off-duty looks from Julia Roberts, Mariah Carey, and Naomi Campbell set the tone for effortless style, an influence that still resonates in today’s everyday dressing.
Denim trends continue to evolve from design to sustainable processes but its versatility makes it a go-to season after season. So we’ve locked in the top 5 must-know denim trends shaping the current fashion landscape in 2025 and the brands defining them.
Barrel leg denim
The contemporary barrel leg silhouette first appeared on the FW23 runway of Pieter Mulier’s fourth collection for Alaïa and then again for two seasons after that and little did we know the force it would be. The show celebrated curves and their innate sensuality, a hallmark of the brand dating back to its 1980s collections, where the female form was a central theme, evident even today in a modern interpretation of the barrel leg silhouette. Fashion, to Alaïa, was about the body. A vision that's never steered far from the collections through the years. This continuation of curve design birthed a refreshing interpretation of denim that stood out amidst the short-lived skinny jeans comeback, offering a style that felt like an empowering expression of what women actually wanted to wear.
So do we owe the success of barrel leg denim to popular culture's western influences or fashion’s playful flirtation with equestrian style? Are those jodhpurs we see somewhere in there? We’re not entirely sure, but the flattering nature of the silhouette has definitely played its part, once they're on, you're sold. Alaïa is the go-to for cut and shape, honing in on a flawless structure that is the focal point of an outfit, while Agolde delivers a balloon denim that is a subtle nod to the trend, for those feeling less braven to the exaggerated shape. Pair yours with elevated basics like a fitted knit or rollneck to keep the look effortless and a pointed toe to balance proportions.

Embellished denim
It was a Valentino Couture FW 23/24 moment that officially switched up ‘jeans a nice top’ to ‘nice jeans and a top’. Creative Director, Pierpaolo Piccioli reinvented vintage Levi’s 501 into an embellished trouser style mirroring what looked like denim, but definitely wasn’t. The piece was an incredible craft of beads embroidered diagonally in the same way as the twill of denim and styled back to a crisp white shirt on Kaia Gerber as the opening look. Denim? Couture? Well, yes a little groundbreaking to fashion insiders. It was, in every sense, a defining fashion moment. Embellished jeans are a break-through statement trend that continue to bring a lot more fun to day-to-night looks. From eyelets and fringe to diamanté and sequins, this trend is the fun in clothes that was much needed after the reign of quiet luxury.
Frame, the hero go-to denim brand has designed a show piece season after season that's statement enough to pair back to basics, an outfit recipe that won't fail you. And Rotate has reimagined the wardrobe staple in true Scandi-girl fashion, just look to the street-style crowd for outfit inspiration.
Denim trench
The denim trench has proven itself a staple in outerwear, going effortlessly from a functional coat to a stand-alone outfit. For SS25, Schiaparelli reimagined this classic with bold details, showing just how high fashion denim can get. This is the evolution in wearable era that the creative director, Daniel Rosberry is leading the brand in. FW24 was a turning point for the ready-to-wear womenswear collection for the brand with a remix of trouser and skirt denim sets that felt like tomorrow's treasures.
When it comes to shopping, The Frankie Shop is the fail-safe destination known for versatile staple pieces that are the ultimate additions to a forever wardrobe. Their offering of outerwear with a desired modern fit means the pieces are ideal for layering and transeasonal dressing. The denim trench has hit many wishlists and since been a fav outfit for show go-ers styled belted with a statement shoe or bag. Dries Van Noten first launched its artisanal denim capsule in SS23, with continued bleached pieces for FW24 that offer boxy light denim silhouettes, the go to for modern romantics.
Upcycled and vintage denim
In today's shopping landscape, finding a ‘new’ pair of jeans often means opting for upcycled or pre-loved options. With deadstock fabrics readily available, many brands are embracing upcycling to create one-of-a-kind, unique designs. On the other hand, buying vintage denim feels like an even smarter choice when you consider the broader environmental impact of fashion and the resource-heavy process of producing new denim.
A.W.A.K.E mode has embraced upcycling and recycling by reimagining discarded materials into bold, innovative pieces that redefine denim. Their recognisable denim collections with patchwork design and off-cuts add character to the otherwise blank template of denim.
Hunting down vintage denim has never been more appealing, with resale sites like eBay, Vestiaire, and HEWI offering luxury finds at a fraction of their original price. Jean Paul Gaultier’s denim pieces are a perfect nod to the noughties aesthetic, while YSL vintage reimagines 90s model-off-duty for a modern wardrobe staple with personality.
Wide-leg denim
Wide-leg denim became a staple in wardrobes around the world around the 1960-70’s, they were the hallmark of bohemian. Since then, trousers have evolved through various baggy iterations, from the oversized hammer pants of the 90s to the revival of flared jeans in the noughties. Today, the love for loose-fitting denim has come full circle, with brands like Balenciaga leading an athleisure movement which has relaxed silhouettes as the ultimate cool-girl way of dressing. Oversized denim has cemented itself as a fashion insider’s staple, its effortless nature now more coveted than ever. The mantra? The wider, the better.
Italian denim brand Haikure has quickly become known for its sharp cuts and contemporary redesigns that offer fresh styles to just the usual pair of jeans. Entire Studios, founded by Yeezy collaborators and Kylie Jenner stylists, have become an insider favourite for contemporary oversized silhouettes.
